Must I take BIO alone?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello Everyone!

This is my first post so forgive me if I dont make sense. I am currently working full time at one of the hospital's in Reno,NV in Radiology Scheduling and working on all of my prerequisites for the nursing program. It has been a while since I was in school and I ended up having to enroll in remedial classes. I was mapping out all of the classes I needed to take before I could apply to the Nursing Program to see when I would be able to apply with the program. If I take three classes each semester plus a summer class I can apply in Fall 2011. What I was trying to get at is this...people have told me that I should take all of the BIO classes by themselves and completely focus on them to ensure the best grade. If I did this it will take me 4 years before I could even apply! One thing to consider is that even though I work full time, I have a good amount of time in between calls which I use to do homework. I am taking two classes right now and wish I would have done three because I am ahead on both classes.

I am very motivated and REALLY want this.:heartbeat I am trying to be patient and of course I want the best grades possible but do you think I can take classes along with my BIO classes to speed things up? Am I being totally unrealistic? Does anyone know from experience if this is a good or bad idea?

Thanks for your advise!

Hi AyvasMom,

I remember when I started working on my pre's and it did seem like it will take forever, but it seems to fly by super fast. You are the only won who truly knows what you are capable of. My suggestion is to try out 3 classes next semester and usually by drop deadline you will know if you can handle it or not. Keep in mind though, that you don't want your grades or GPA to suffer because you just want to take as many classes as time permits. There are some classes that will be harder than others and each person handles it differently. So one semester you may take 3, and the next only 2, and so on.

Good Luck to you and welcome to ALLNURSES.COM:up:

If you feel like bio is something that will be hard to you try taking it with classes that you may find easier. thats was my motto. i took Ap 1 and 2 consecutively and both semesters i too about sixteen credits and i received A's. that was because bio was so interesting and easy for me. But if you can make the time to study and have good memorization skills you will do fine , it all depends on how hard you willing to work to maintain your GPA. Good Luck!

I don't think it matters, I would take what works for you. I am doing bio classes one at a time, although I didn't realize it until I just looked at my list. However, this semester I have AP1, Chem and Nutrition...two hard classes with one easy. This fall though I have college algebra, stats, micro w/lab and english comp 2 - 3 harder ones, 1 easy. Remember, bios aren't always the harder ones. I started my nursing pre-reqs in Fall of 08 and I will be done at the end of Fall of 09 - 12 classes. It doesn't have to take forever.

I am starting my nursing pre-reqs this summer and I am trying to plan all my classes out, because I too don't want it to take forever....I was thinking about doing bio and chem together, and actually came her to see what others have done. For me, a minimum of "C" is required for both of these classes , so I was thinking about doing that. so even if I don't do great, I'll still have them done. I have never had chemistry so I wasn't certain that was a good idea.

I am starting this summer with English, Psych, and Algebra. I think that's a do-able start.

I am curious how other students plan out their courses.

I planned mine firstly according to what had pre-reqs. AP2 had to come after AP1 which comes after Bio. Three semesters right there. The rest I just filled in with a mixture I thought would work well for a course load and cost (I'm paying cash as I go along, ugh).

Sand Dollar...now you got me thinking.....there are alot of consecutive sciences...Now I'm thinking maybe I should start with Bio, so I can get them going. Would biology be a bad idea for a summer course?

Naw, go for it and start that ball rolling, its not hard - I got an A (we're the same age, btw). I found it pretty easy and I was still able to whiz through the first 4 chapters of our text in AP because of the bio, so that was nice - and easy tests for me. It was also in a short fall semester of 7.5 wks, so if you take it in a 10 wk summer semester, you shouldn't have a problem.

I took only 2 classes in the short fall semester and wished I had added another, so because of that this summer I'm doing 3 classes.

I have been trying to plan this out too! I am starting in APril with Biology with Lab and English Comp.....the summer I plan to do Algebra and Psychology....then A&P 1 in the fall, and A&P 2 in the winter, then Pharmacology next April.....I need to get a NAC class in there too....so I am debating when to do that......I am leaving the BIO classes one at a time right now......but I am not sure....I am reading up on A&P now.,...and am finding it easier that Biology.....so who knows!

Good Luck!

At my CC they break down the summer into three sessions...which makes it a hell of alot easier to take classes in the summer...

the first session im taking a 8 week general bio and a 12 week general chem...and the last session Im taking an 8 week A & P 1 :banghead:......i know i have sacrafice my whole summer vacation inorder to ensure i get good grades in these classes...but it will be worth it in the end...........wish me luck!
