Hello! I just got a job offer at MUSC in charleston. It would be a pay cut to move there, but I am looking for a change. I am deciding between NC and SC. I am currently in DC. The cost of living is less in NC. But you pay more to live near the ebach I guess.
I keep reading articles about the average person not beign able to afford a home in Charleston due to the demand and everyone moving down there. Plus, they have among the highest electric rates in the South? Is anyone seeing that? Or is it the high insurance rates (flood/earthquake...etc). I am just concerned the pay cut is too much and can I really afford to live there comfortably with all these extra fees/rates.... that I am not used too.
I would be making 27.76/hr at MUSC starting.
Charleston nurses, do you loving working at MUSC and living in the area? Is it a good lifestyle?

I am not a nurse yet and will be actually attending the ABSN there at MUSC :) Insurance is only more expensive if you live close to the beach or in a flood plain. I have lived in SC for 14 years and like it OK. Be warned, the culture here is way different than in DC. I pay about $150/ month for electric, which goes up in the summer due to A/C and down in the winter, but $150 is probably the average for my 4 bedroom house. Living downtown where MUSC is located is pretty expensive, but there are other nice areas that are affordable, such as Mt. Pleasant, West Ashley, etc. If I could afford it, I would live in Mt. Pleasant. It has tons of good boutique shopping, great restaurants, is close to beaches, and is close to downtown.

Not a nurse yet either, but will be starting in a few months! :) We just bought a four bedroom home a few months ago and our electric has been averaging 120 and of course less in the winters. Our insurance is definitely reasonable as we in a low to moderate flood zone. Before buying, we were in a three bedroom apt with electric averaging $75-130 (highest in summers). We are right outside of Mount Pleasant and Daniel Island with lots of shopping and dining!
OOO, I forgot about Daniel Island- it is beautiful! Very nice place to live :)

WE are moving down from Boston next year. Would you mind sharing how many years experience as a RN you have? I have 15 with BSN will fall dead on the floor if it is that big of a pay cut. thanks.
