MUSC ABSN Fall 2016

Published

I know it's early, but just wanted to start a thread for us prospective MUSC Nursing School applicants. I applied for priority admission, based on my overall GPA:3.81, prereq GPA:3.71 with 3 courses in progress (Microbio, Microbio Lab, and Stats) expect no less a than a "B" in any of them - finals next week. I'm out of state, but considered in-state due to Veteran's exemption. Also, I'm a Hispanic male, with 13 years hospital/prehospital experience (Flight Paramedic). Hopefully I will hear about priority soon, but if not then I guess I'll be in the regular admissions pool. I'll keep you posted. Please post stats with comments.

I called earlier today and spoke with Shelley. 1-843-792-8515 She seemed to be expecting the calls and happy to help. So don't hesitate if you're concerned that calling would be a bother to the admissions office.

And, yes, it's a nice surprise they are letting us know early!

I just got my acceptance letter today. Instate about 30 min from musc. :)

Got my letter today too! See you guys in a few months

Hello everyone,

My name is Ashley and i just got my acceptance letter yesterday! I have been following this thread, got extremely nervous, but now the wait is over! I am out of state, was wondering if any in-state could refer good neighborhoods or counties close to campus? Thanks!

Just received my acceptance letter. I'm also out-of-state. Anyone in-state with good info on houses (good neighborhoods) to rent would be much appreciated. I'm relocating my whole family. Excited and anxious.

Dublray78 Are your kids old enough to be in school? James Island has great public schools k-12. You should be able to find a house or condo to rent easily there. If you want to buy a place there should be a fair amount of options too. I live on James Island, so let me know if you have any questions.

Walkability is low pretty much everywhere outside of downtown. But there is a great area in West Ashley called Avondale that has a nice nook of restaurants, bars, and shops you can walk to from the surrounding neighborhoods. There are also a lot of cool houses around that area.

Mt Pleasant is just across the Cooper River from downtown and has some great neighborhoods.

Are you thinking downtown so you can walk/ bike to campus? Or are you ok driving in?

Really open to anything. We have only visited Charleston for short stays in the past. My kids are 5 and 7 (going into 1st and 3rd grades). I'm coming down in June for a week to get a better lay of the land. We're going to buy a house, but we're going to rent for the first year to get settled and really figure where we want to be. My wife is finishing her BSN program here in Texas (Aug 16), so where we live may also depend on where she gets a job along with proximity to MUSC.

For what it's worth, St. Andrews Elementary is a fantastic school for West Ashley. Harborview and Stiles Point elementary schools on James Island are highly ranked too.

Best of luck to your wife on finishing up her program!

Thanks for all the info elcarson87. Looking forward to meeting you In class.

What are you guys doing as far as financial aid? I just finished up the FAFSA and its looking like I can get a federal loan of $7500 a semester but will likely need more than that. What are our other options? Thanks in advance for the advice :)

Other options are really looking for scholarships, grants and (personal) education loans from your bank or credit union.
