Besides aspirin and benadryl does anybody know a multiple purpose drug?

Here are a few that come to mind:

- bupropion

- morphine

- erythromycin (multipurpose in neonates)

- magnesium sulfate

Specializes in NICU.

-Phenobarbital. lots of anticonvulsants, actually.

Thank you so much for the help. Would Valium or Ativan qualify?

Specializes in NICU.

Yep. Used for both seizures and anxiety.

At least I think valium is used for seizures. Positive about the Ativan. Phenobarb is used for seizures and (at least in neonates) for cholestasis.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Tele, IM, OB/GYN, neuro, GI.

There's a lot of drugs that are multi purposed. Just look in your drug guide and the ones that are will have the other purposes listed.

Besides the ones listed no one mentoned the infamous little blue pill. It was originally made for cardiac problems and since one of it's side effects was erections they started using it for ED.

Yep. It's a pulmonary hypertension drug. Just that the side effect is more profitable. We use it in the babies.

For? I know nothing about NICU so I'm curious. The only thing that I know of is that you use caffiene because it's a stumulant.

For pulmonary hypertension. It's a horrible, horrible disease. They'll eventually go into heart failure because the blood can't circulate through the lungs. The Viagra acts as a systemic vasodilator, allowing the vasculature in the lungs to relax and taking some of the pressure off the right side of the heart. That vasodilation is what causes the more well-known side effect. And yes, sometimes it has that effect on the babies, which is kind of shocking the first time you encounter it.

The caffeine is for the preemies who "forget" to breathe sometimes; it's called Apnea of Prematurity. Sometimes at like 3am I wonder if there's enough in those little vials to keep me going until 0730. :D

Specializes in Med/Surg, ICU, ER, Peds ER-CPEN.

Neurontin (gabapentin) - INDICATIONS

• Partial seizures with and without secondary generalization (adjunct treatment) • Postherpetic neuralgia • Unlabelled Uses: • Chronic pain • Prevention of migraine headache

usually it's PO but I've started seeing it in patch form as well

Specializes in Med/Surg, Tele, IM, OB/GYN, neuro, GI.

Thanks for the info I never knew that it was used for that. Yeah my nephew was on caffeine for about three months from being a premie.
