Good evening everyone.
My name is Nicole. I made this forum to connect with potential Mt Sac nursing students who may be applying for Spring 2018 admission. I'm am applying and wanted to see everyone's status, and maybe gain some insight on what is to come. I have not taken my HESI yet; I am taking it August 17th. I am also working on finishing up a summer class to know where my gpa stands for points on the multi criteria. I am between 76 and 83 points depending on my HESI score, gpa, and work experience. Not sure what the cutt off will be for the Spring 2018 semester, but I'm hoping I will have enough points. Hope everyone is having an awesome night. Hope to hear from future students.
When do clinicals start?
2nd or 3rd week after they teach you clinical skills
Where are they located?
Sorry, I don't remember all the sites.
Should I take Med Term. this winter or am I wasting my time?
I didn't take a terminology class, nor did I have a medical background prior to starting the program and I didn't have any problems.
How hard is the first semester really going to be?
I found the material pretty easy. The hard part is getting used to the schedule and workload.

Thank you so much, this is really helpful!
Had I known now how Mt. SAC's nursing program operates I would of chosen a different nursing program . If you're fine with getting C's and B's then this program is for you. Just because you have a 4.0 GPA now doesn't mean you'll be able to maintain it throughout the program. I heard someone say this at my orientation and I thought to myself, "yeah we'll see about that." They were right. It's extremely hard to get A's even if you spend all your time studying. Even though C's and B's will get you through the program you have to be the type of person where less then perfect is acceptable. Mt. SAC's ADN program is the college's bread and butter and they have to maintain a certain standard of difficulty in order to maintain their "prestigious" status however that may be. Also, this program seems to train to time rather than to standard. If the schedule says lecture or clinicals ends at a certain time then expect to be there until that time even if you're proficient in the day's objectives. The majority of the program's students would agree that the uniforms are ugly. Lectures are mandatory but are very light in content which are useless for test preparation. Had I known all of this before starting I would of attended a different nursing program even if it was further away from where I live. Negativity aside, I'll leave on a positive note. The one thing good about this program is that not all clinical instructors are the same and do things differently. So what you learn in one clinical rotation might not be the way your clinical instructor wants it done in another. To this end, you become more well rounded as a nursing student by the time you graduate having learned how to do the same task over and over again that produce the same results. Good luck! Most people do fine.
Hi ak88,
I stopped by the campus bookstore today and there were several books available for semester one which in total cost about $1200. Fortunately most of them were marked "Optional", but there was a "Box of Nursing Books" marked required which cost $580. The "Box of Nursing Books" didn't indicate which books were in it but it did indicate that they were for Nurse 1A, 1B, and pharmacology. I have emailed the nursing dept. and asked for a complete list of required books so I can start gathering them now, if they send one to me I'll post it here if anyone is interested. Also, I recently (within the last 6-9 months) had to have a background check done for another healthcare program which cost around $40 (the Live Scan cost were included in the initial program tuition). All of the necessary test and vaccinations cost me about $100 at the student health center on campus, but I used my med. ins. for the physical done by my pcp. Not sure about uniforms or supplies but I will say that I am hoping that the uniforms have improved from past versions. Hope this helps a bit...
hi funnie17,
Thanks for the information I think we need the cd that comes with the books for some of the classes so I am going to wait until orientation to find out what exactly I need to get for books. We have alot to prepare including cpr (if youre not certified), background check, physical exams..etc.
It would be nice to get a new style of uniform! Excited to start nursing school
What are the prerequisites for applying to Mt. Sac? The next info session isn't until March and I want to know before registering for Spring. Thank you.
Math 71 elegable, Eng. 1A, Anatomy 10 or 35, Physiology 10 or 35, Chemistry 10 (prerequisite for micro), and Microbiology 1 or 22; all of these must be completed prior to program application. Psych. 1A and Child 10 will also need to be completed prior to taking their corresponding nursing courses which, but they don't necessarily need to be done before submitting your application although doing so is a good idea.
I would suggest becoming very familiar with the programs multi criteria screening guidelines and meeting with a school counselor for direction; when scheduling counseling be sure to ask for someone familiar with the nursing program. Best of luck...
