MSN UT? Help Guys/Gals

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hi I spent the week here reading posts and opinions which I thought was very helpful. I have been drawn back to the med profession no matter which way I went and have inquired about the MSN program at UT. This is an alternate entry program and I wanted to get your opinion about my situation. I have a BA in PM Bio and worked as a NA in the ER for a summer, Christmas, and Spring Break while going to school. I also spent a year in direct care Residential Psych after school and admissions and contracting for a Residential Psych facility for 3 years.

After reading around here that facilities might not want to pay or hire a new hire MSN after graduation and the fact they want me to take A&P again since its been 6 years has put me off (Had an A in Human Phys and lab even an A in an extra Geriatric Phys in England 4K level, and a B in Anatomy). Any comments or encouragement? Also TX seems to be lagging behing in general salary.

Salaries = I don't think they lag too much behind other areas CONSIDERING housing is so well priced.

Education = I can pretty much guarantee you that if you are hired to work as an RN in a hospital you will be payed the same rate as any other starting RN (regardless of the MSN behind your name) if you are doing the same work. If you are hired as a clinical nurse specialist or educator it might be different.

Specializes in ICU, ER, HH, NICU, now FNP.

Most places pay a very small amount of money an hour more for the MS. They dont seem to care about a BS though.

Salaries overall compared to cost of living are excellent here.

Specializes in Emergency and ICU.

I am an ADN but almost all my friends are APN/MSN. I would really look at programs. I would look at Houston at UT. I live and work sometimes in Dallas but Houston has better education for advance practice. Better pay in the area. Experience pays but flattens out at 5 years in Texas for an RN. Get 2 years and travel with a base in Texas. The South pays lower. Get the housing here. Get your loans paid back at all possible by chosing a work experience that repays. You need real advice and I find that hard sometimes when not in the loop but looking from outside in.

Grades are good but look at the ease of the system. Contact them all. I would look at every school and the costs in Texas. I don't really know about Praire View in Houston but they had a good BSN transition program and maybe there is a bridge program. Experience is bedside.
