Can someone tell me why someone with MS would be prescribed a vitamin D supplement? Is it because it somehow reduces exacerbation?

A neuro person might be able to give a better answer.
This is a relatively new area of research that has stemmed from a correlation between hypovitaminosis D and deceased scores on the MME. The actual pathway is multifactorial but it seems to be partially related to vitamin D's role in nitric oxide synthase which is involved in both neuronal signaling and development/remodeling.

There has been a lot of research lately on the role of Vitamin D in demyelinating diseases. When I worked inpatient neuro, patients with MS were maintained on very high doses of Vitamin D supplementation.

Ms is an auto-immune disorder. Autoimmune diseases are characterized by abnormal function of the body's immune system that causes the body to attack its own cells and tissues. The most common autoimmune diseases are rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, Type I diabetes and certain thyroid conditions. Research found that vitamin D deficiency is common in these populations and supplementation with this nutrient may benefit individuals with autoimmune conditions.
