hey there! i'm planning on moving to the states when i graduate next spring, and am wondering if anyone knows what the rules/regulations are concerning bringing your car with you to the states. i know it has to conform to the environmental and dot standards, but i keep hearing differing reports about duty and whatnot. any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

It probably varies from State to State but when we moved to Washington State it was a paperwork nightmare but didn't actually cost us any money. We had to get the original specifications from Volkswagen (original letter from the manufacturer) and then go to get it inspected at State Patrol but it didn't cost us any money out of pocket. Then the usual registration, etc... proof of insurance etc... Registration is separate from insurance quite different than the way things are in Canada.

Are you going down permanently or temporarily? I did travel nursing contracts and I was able to keep my Canadian Insurance. My contracts were temporary and I was driving back to Canada a couple times a year. My Insurance broker was fine with that.
