Moving to Pittsburgh

Hi,

In May of this year, I will graduate from the Salem State College in Salem, Massachusetts with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. There is a good possibility I will be relocating to the Pittsburgh area after graduation. I am looking to find out more information regarding the nursing opportunities for new graduates in the Pittsburgh area. I have just begun my online search, and I know West Penn has multiple facilities throughout the Pittsburgh area. I would be moving somewhere in the area of Moon Township or Coraopolis. Could anyone tell me which hospitals have good reputations and or look to hire new graduates? Which hospitals in the area offer strong new graduate opportunities? Starting salaries, if you know? Also, when should I begin applying ? I have emailed one nursing recruiter from West Penn, but I have not yet heard back.

I would even appreciate tips on apartment searches, which areas are the best. I need to keep a somewhat close commute to the Robert Morris campus since my boyfriend will be working there.

I too decided against UPMC after having shady interviews at 2 of their hospitals. Some of my friends who are graduating with me took jobs at Presby and they said they loved it there when they interviewed, so what works for one person, might not work for another. If I were staying in Pittsburgh, I would try St Clair, Sewickley, Beaver Medical Center, or Ohio Valley. Again, that's my thoughts and I don't want to discourage anyone who has their heart set on a particular facility. Good luck.

I currently work at UPMC Shadyside and I am not sure how much longer I will be there. I have only been there since january and it is already very frustrating. I chose a difficult floor to start on rather than going into the field I really wanted and I've been regretting it ever since.

I lasted 2 months at UPMC. I've worked enough other places to know I don't need to put up with that. As was said, parking was awful and staffing and morale terrible. I had to allow a 1/2 hour to get the shuttle from the parking lot. St. Claire is a very nice hospital and has high staff satisfaction. Also, consider what you're commute into Pitt. will be like. You might find you have a better quality of life working in Sewickley or Ohio Valley and avoiding the horrible traffic in and out of the city. Canonsburg Hospital also looked like it wasn't too bad. It's a community hospital about 30 min. south of the airport (Moon). If you have to work in town, West Penn, AGH and Mercy are better choices than the UPMC group. Also, if you relocate, taxes are higher if you live in Allegheny County. Good luck!
