Moving to Northport, Port Charlotte Area

U.S.A. Florida

Published

:specs:We are currently thinking about moving to Florida from PA (tooo many taxes here!!!). My in laws live in Northport and seems like a nice place to live.

Im looking into entering a nursing career (currently in customer service call center). Ive done tons of research for LPN. And Manatee Tech seems like they have a great LPN program. Only 10 months! And not that expensive at all!!!! HAs anyone else gone to that school for LPN program and do you live in Northport area?

I know the tech school is about an hour away from in laws(maybe a little less).

Is Northport a nice area? How is the housing there also. Im excited to enter a new career and may actually be able to buy my FIRST HOUSE! and buy a NEW car hopefully! thanks

Thanks for the reply and the recommendation! It is greatly appreciated! I wonder how far in advance I should register(try to) for CTC. I think I saw that they only offer it in Jan, and in April.

We wont be moving until sometime between the end of this summer and next Jan. And it will definantly be closer to my inlaws place. We will live with them while I go to school, to take some burden(bills) off my shoulders. Then reaseon we are waiting to move is because my step son graduates this june from high school. So we figured we wouldnt pull him out his last year and move. But this way we can save some money too. I hope the hospitals are good to work for after I graduate. Id love a hospital job! Thanks for the info!

You are so welcome! Good luck to you!

This is the perfect thread for me! I am currently an LPN in Nebraska, been working dialysis and med/surg floor and we just bought a house in NorthPort last week! My parents live there and we love it there so are finally making the move. My company has a dialysis unit in Port Charlotte that I visited and can transfer there if I want, but I am really leaning to home-health care and hospice. Something I've always enjoyed doing. I was surprised at the pay scale for an LPN at the dialysis clinic...just around 16.50/hr. I was expecting more. But our new neighbors are an Rn and an LPN. The RN works in Ft. Meyers and the LPN works in Sarasota, because of the pay scale. So I'm unsure of what I will do right now. Just got my Florida license in the mail today...so I'm official! Hope to be down there in a couple of months...as soon as we sell the house in the frozen tundra!

If you have any suggestions on hospice and home health companies...I would love some input.

miss pammie-

as a fl lpn, i have come in contact with the local hospice through my hospital, now called peace river regional medical center on harbor blvd in p.c., and i can tell you that they are a truly incredible organization. the nurses are very caring, and their clients and families were very satisfied with the care they received. the site for them is tidewell.org, and i hope it will give you some more info. best of luck and let me know how it goes!:anpom:

Thanks So Much, I have actually printed out their application and sent them an email. Hopefully I will receive a response. Their website is full of information and sounds like a wonderful organization. I'll keep you posted!

With the exception of seven years, I have lived, worked, and been a patient in all three of the hospitals here in Port Charlotte. I also know the head of the Charlotte Vo-tech program. She runs a tight ship but her program has always turned out good LPNs. I taught at the Sarasota Vo-tech program for one year and it is also a good program. Travel wise, if you live in North Port, you will be better off going to Charlotte Vo-tech. It is closer and there is a lot less driving. Sarasota's program is six exits away on I75 and a mile west of I75. North Port broke ground on a new facility being built my Sarasota Memorial. It is suppose to have less then a hundred beds to start. I believe it will be completed in 2010.

Im currently near Harrisburg. After todays drive into work, I CANT wait to get to Florida. Good to know about Manatee Tech! Thanks! My in laws currently live in NorthPort too! So Im excited to move there, hopefully this summer or fall.

Thanks for your reply!

We moved to North Port from NH almost 2 years ago. I miss NH a lot but this is a nice quiet town. My husband built our house here and we bouth the land just before the prices went through the roof. now, the prices are way down and like someone else said, home owners are begging to deal right now. Now is the time to come here and buy a house.

I was in nursing school for 3.5 years in NH and I moved here and they will not take my nursing theory credits as transfers at MCC. The school is only about 15 minutes away from me. (Venice branch) MCC does not take transfer students. They are making me retake the nursing theory's over again (2 classes) and then I will take the the other and I will be done. I finished all but those classes to finish the AS degree. I am on the wiat list and they say it is 2 years. We will see. I have excellent grades but MCC told me that that does not matter as they do not accept transfers. I have to go to the bottom of the list like everyone else. I am not worried about it though. There are so many hospitlas around here and since I have been a stay at home mom for so many years I thought I needed to go back and help my husband out with the bills. I am applying at a hospital in Port Charlotte as a PCA. I hope I get it. I am no longer CAN lisenced but I have the nursing school clinicals and previous CAN experience behind me. Wish me luck!

Welcome to FL when you get here. It is a great area.

Hi,

Just wanted to mention that SCTI the vocational school in Sarasota county has an excellent LPN program. It's got a much better reputation than the Manatee school--and it's much closer to North Port. I also have a friend that graduated not long ago from the technical school LPN program in Port Charlotte and said it was an excellent program. I would consider looking into both of those schools...

Good luck! :)

Hi FL-Nurse. I think you may be referring to the MCC in Bradenton. That one is about a little more than an hour from North Port. But, the MCC in Venice is only about 15-20 minutes depending on where in North Port you live. Sarasota is at least 45 minutes away.

Down here, count your blessings if you get to work for Tidewell as a CNA. Best company, best benefits, best experience. SCTI is number one but tough as eating leather. Going there was mind twisting, but you come out as a super nurse. And the industry knows it.

Also I heard rumors that SCTI/LPN was going to move to Venice in the future.
