[congrats on thinking about the big move, i'm a kiwi. if you want beautiful scenery go to the south island, or if you want bigger cities try the north island.

could you tell me a little more about the workign conditions for nurses in nz? do you work in a hospital or aged care? what kindof ratios are expected for aged care?

I work in a hospital (that recently closed its aged care facility) most aged care is privately run in NZ now. Ratios vary depending on employer, are you talking RN to patient? cos if u r a RN you often have carers working with you also although u r ultimately responsible. Overall conditions are not too bad it certainly pays to asertain what the requirements are when you apply for a job.

Nurses are currently fighting for fay pay in NZ as opposed to other professions such as police and teachers. The Govt states it believes in equal pay but reckons they don't have the budget to increase nurses wages. :angryfire

Wages also vary between organisations and responsibility.

hi, if you want to know about the different hospitals do a search for the district health boards. Most hospital areas are on the net.

We have been living in New Zealand since Sept 2002. I went through an agency which was very helpful, I can't remember the name of it but their are plenty.

We went straight for residency as the goal posts change a bit and you never know if when you come to reapply you will be still eligible.

We live on the North Island in a place called Whangarei about 2 hours north of Auckland. It only has a population of about 50,000. If you like the big smoke and lots of clubing then this is not the place for you. A beautiful place for your children to grow up in.

we have just returned from a 3 week trip to new zealand. we managed to see a lot of the main places on the north island, but whangarei and a place called wanganui, on the west coast below new plymouth were our favourites.

it would be great to hear from you again with some info about living and working in the whangarei area. we noticed there was a big hospital there which apparently covers most of the northland area. as i mentioned in my previous message, i currently work in infection control and my husband works for the ambulance service. any contacts for these areas would be really helpful. we have two teenagers, one 16 and one 18 years, any info on stuff for them to do in that area would also be a great help.

its a pity you didn't get my message before you went on holiday as you could of visited us.

You said you work in infection control I don't think their would be any jobs in Whangarei in that field, but if you are willing to be flexible their is aways vacancies here. Especialy in theatre where I am and I C U. I don't Know about the ambulance service but I'm sure I could find something out for you.

What kind of things do your boys like to do. Sport is very big here, their are lots of football and Rugby teams hockey is also big here. There are cycling clubs lots of good places for fishing and kyaking is also popular. Lots of walking routes. If you let me know what they like I can find out for you. If the older one whats further education thie is a polytech in Whangarei although I don't know what you can study there.

Nursing doesn;t pay as well as at home but really you come for life style here although their is a big drive for pay parity with police teachers etc same as at home. I am top staff grade which is about $43,000 per annum.

Property is cheaper here in the fact your money goes further we have a five bedroom house with just under 4 acres of land and we paid $450,000 even in Hartlepool where we lived when we left we could get a four bedroom nice house for that but our neighbours would have been probably 10 feet away either side.

i am a british rgn of 15 years with surgical, hdu and community experience, have a long term partner and 3 lovely girls!! we are planning to move to nz later in the year after a long time planning!!!
my qualifications are registered in nz and i have received my practising certificate. we would like to live in northland, after falling in love with the area. any help, advise, or previous experiences in moving and working here would be gratefully appreciated.

seems to be a lot of us planning to move from uk to nz. i'm a midwife here in scotland and wanted to go to nz for years, couldn't persuade my hubby. then we got the chance to go over last year and that was it. everyone was hooked even the kids. i'm in the process of sorting out my registration at the moment. midwifery council have a lot of criterea to meet, expensive too. (approx. £450-£500) we were hoping to have things sorted out so we could go sometime between august & october this year. bit worrying to hear about time of registration process though.

have you been able to secure a job yet? what about relocation packages from the health boards is there such a thing in nz? have you heard?

good luck with all your plans. good to know so many others are in the same position it's great to get first hand info & advice. also encouragement to keep going when it looks like things will never happen. we're hoping to go to hawkes bay area. hope there'll be jobs in that area.

i'm an rn, living in northland - kaitaia to be exact. i work for the northland district health board (northland health), and for kaitaia maternity services, who have the contract for maternity services and run the ward at kaitaia hospital.

Well, thats a big question with a wide range of answers. There are probably thousands of schools in the north island. It depends whether you are talking primary or secondary. What ages are your boys? Are you looking at hospital or private nursing? Do you want an coastal area, rural area or city area? If you give some more info, we may be able to help. Also are you talking private or public schools?

Hi Fran

I have recently secured a job in Hastings as a midwife but will probably live closer to Napier. Will be moving out in October this year. Lots of organising to do now. There's a huge choice of schools, from privat, state, single sex, intermediate, you name it.....! We found that they are scored by decile ratings 1 - 10. 10 being the best. Exchange rate not so good at the moment so this will greatly affect our purchasing power on property. We seemed to be talking about this for so long, now all of a sudden things are snowballing at an incredible rate. So be prepared. Choosing an area has been really difficult and I hope we have made the right choice with Napier!! Anyone from this area, it'd be great to hear from you.

Will get in touch once in NZ so any help I can give before then or after, only too glad to help.

Hi There,

I am from England and I'm a Registered General Nurse (RGN), Registered Children's Nurse (RCN), Bsc Hons Degree, Nurse Practitioner, Worked within Accident & Emergency for 5 years and 2 years in primary care working as a Nurse Practitioner with a Doctor.

I have a Family my husband works for the Lincs. ambulance service and a have two children aged 3 years and 14 weeks. And we are looking at moving to NZ as a permanent move but need more information about, hospitals (A&E), pay, schools, housing best areas and areas to avoid. At present all areas, except the middle of the city's.

And if possible would like other nurses who have come from England to NZ to talk to as pen friends to help with these questions and probably many more later when we think of them.

What sort of relocation packages and help with immigration and moving?
