I have been a LPN for 2 yrs and will graduate with my RN in Dec this year. I plan to move to Houston either directly after graduation or the next May. I was wondering what type of salary I might expect and if it will be a little higher based on my LPN experience. Also, do any of the hospitals offer relocation assistance, and how does the interview process go if you live so far away? I am thinking of moving to the Katy area, what are the good hospitals in that area? I plan to work in either NICU or L&D, but I also like dialysis. If anyone has any advice I would love to hear it! Thank you so much!

I am moving to Houston from IA next week. So I may not have all the answers but I can try to help. Not sure on the pay and if it would be increased by your experience, but I would think it would help. Now we went and looked at Katy, and it was a nice town, but for me it was too far out, the commute into houston I have heard takes an hour + and the day we went, the traffic was crazy. Mem Hermann has a hospital out there, I bet there might be one more. They do offer relocation bonuses..I traveled down for my interviews, but I am sure they do them over the phone also...if you want more specifics you can PM me and I can try!! Good Luck!!!

MrsNjoro,
WELCOME TO HOUSTON!!!!
Normally, your LPN experience does have some impact on the salary that will be offered to you. However, there are too many variables (years of experience, clinical area, etc) for you to get any idea of your "market rate".
I am with a company that has a hospital in Katy & I would be happy to put you in touch with their nurse recruiter.... send me a private message if you would like the info. She will be able to provide you with information that is specific to your situation.
Katy is a great area - plenty of affordable housing and a superb school system. Beaucoup shopping in the area, so you really never have drive on the "beast" (I-10) into Houston unless you really want to.
Thank you so much for the replies! I have another question, when should I start the application process? Do people usually apply when they enter the last semester or should I wait until graduation is a little closer?
I would apply early...alot of the hospitals do internships for new grads..check the websites. They seem pretty competetive so you might want to get in as soon as you can.
