Moving to FT Lewis, WA area...

My wife & I will be moving to Tumwater, WA. I report to Madigan Army Medical Center [Ft Lewis] for a 3 year committment as a member of the Army Nurse Corps, Active Component [AC] on April 3, 2006. I will start phase II [12 week] of the critical care course on the 23rd, and remain at Madigan as a critical care nurse. This is a life changing event going from the reserves [RC] to the [AC], as well as moving over 2100 miles from Central Texas.

I would definitely appreciate any info related to civilian hospitals within a 30 mile radius would also be greatly appreciated, too. My wife is an ADN RN with +13 years experience in cardiac floor & emergency cardiac care nursing.

We will be moving to Tumwater, WA. Our new home will be Breckenridge Heights apartment complex with a 2bdrm/2ba & two garages & assigned covered parking, too.

My wife, ADN RN w/+13 yrs exp in cardiac floor & emergency cardiac care nursing, talked via phone with a Providence St Peters Nurse Recruiter. My wife will apply for a position at ST Peters, plus was told they would be willing to do a telephone interview. Anybody have any experience with ST Peters hospital?

If, any WA RNs hear of a Telemetry, or Cardiac ER nursing position please let us know, TIA!

I live in Spokane, Washington, which is on the other side of the state, by Idaho. There are many hospitals on the Western side of the state. In Seattle, there is University of Washington, Harbor View, Swedish Medical Center, Virgina Mason, the list goes on. In Tacoma, south of Seattle, (which is where Ft Lewis is), there is St, Joseph Medical Center, and others that I cannot remember the names of. The traffic in the Seattle area is horrendous. I would google hospitals in western Washington, and see what you come up with.

It is very expensive to live in Seattle, and Tacoma probably is a close second. I am not sure about Olympia (it is south of Tacoma), but it probably is also pricey. There are suburbs around Seattle, and I think that they are a litttle cheaper than Seattle. If you wanted to have a commuter marriage, Spokane, is alot cheaper that the west coast (Spokane is 300 miles east of Seattle). The pay is alot less here, as well.

Update...

The On-Post Housing waiting list is 9 - 12 months. So, I must find Off-Post residence [NLT March 1st] for my wife & I d/t my 23 yr old son has Spring Break March 13-17. He will help me with his PU trailor my Vette up to WA at that time. So, most apt complexes will hold an apt. for two weeks, and I figure it would best to have a place picked out with a garage to leave my Vette.

We have no pets, our kids are grown [21 - 25 yrs old], and have no desire to rent a house. However, we need an apartment complex with at least a garage, plus assigned carport parking d/t I have a 2001 Corvette & my wife owns a 2004 Honda S2000, and we share a 2004 Honda Civic. So far, I've been in contact with Clock Tower Village apts. in Dupont & Breckenridge Heights apts. in Tumwater. Breckenridge Heights has a garage & assigned carport pkg, whereas Clock Tower has an attached garage, otherwise first come first serve on pkg for our two other cars. Has anyone seen either of these two apt. complexes? If so, please share your thoughts.

I can't help you but I know someone who can. My cousin and her husband live in Lacey, WA, not far from Tumwater. He's stationed at Fort Lewis. If it's alright with you, I'll forward my cousin your info regarding specialities, etc. and see what kind of response you get. I can't promise anything, but her and her husband have been out there for about two years and know the area.

That would be appreciated! Except, my wife is the one looking for work as a Telemetry, or IMC RN. I will do a 12 week critical care course at Madigan Army Medical Center, then upon completion remain at MAMC for a 3 yr active duty committment as a critical care nurse [66H8A]. It would be good to get some info from a Soldier regards to Ft Lewis info, etc.

Do you by chance know if I will be able to practice as an emergency room RN in the Army Reserves? Or will I have to go to the dreaded floor? Or something different? All I know is ED...YIKES.

As long as your accepted into the Army Nurse Corps with the AOC 66HM5, then you will be an Emergency Room Nurse in the ANC
