Hello everyone,
If you wouldn't mind, I would appreciate any advice or pitfall warnings for a second career, 41-year-old pre-nursing student moving to the Tyler area. I would like to make sure I fit in and succeed. I'm working on my CNA and would like to work as an LVN while working on my RN. Thank you! :heartbeat
agree with blessed2banrs on everything except the hospital description. i was offered at job at both hospitals but preferred etmc. they are both good hospitals, but have different personalities. i just preferred the etmc "personality" i guess.
okay, ron,
i know you are a hard core etmc employee!!! but thanks for agreeing with the rest! :chuckle that said, both places have thier advantages and disadvantages, like everywhere. and it is nice that we can agree to disagree and still be friends!!! hope all is going well in your new nursing position!
Oh wow, RN1989, such great information from someone who knows it well; thank you! Those are the areas that seem to catch my attention also. Texans are so helpful. I'm looking forward to friendly people; everyone is too busy for friends and sometimes even family, and keeps so much to themselves over here. Over here, living near the beach is very desirable. Is it the same way there?
Well, I can't speak for Tyler, but I live near the coast and our beaches are no where near California beaches!! The water looks like mud, literally! On the other hand, there is alot of opportunity here and 2 really good schools that have LVN-RN programs, I just graduated from one and passed my boards Thursday! However, if I had to move I would definatley head to the Austin area, it is just beautiful and the people there are ALOT more open minded than East Texas! I love the Hill country and there is so much to do you would never be bored that's for sure! Well, good luck to you and Welcome to Texas Ya'll!!
:heartbeatI live in one of the smaller towns outside of Tyler and work at the Mother Francis Hospital. I love my job....we are a faith based hospital and have a very strong and supportive pastoral care. Its great to have know that when you have a patient totally overwhelmed with what life has thrown them that there is someone you can call 24/7 to sit and listen to them and help them through a rough time. I grew up in East Texas and love the area. The Lakes (Tyler and Palestine) are gorgeous and there are many small towns that each have their own style and "hometown" feel about them. I couldn't imagine being anywhere else.:heartbeat
Mothers IS great, liriel!! Although, in ICU where I am at, it has been extremely busy and full!!! Where at Mothers do you work? You are very correct about the strong and supportive pastoral care there. I love working with Sister Margo. She is so friendly, great with the patients/family, and is such a hoot!!
Thank you for adding your 2 cents about East Texas. It is gorgeous here and at the lakes, not to mention, we have a hot celebrity with a summer house on one of the lakes down the road!!! Patrick Dempsey and his family are often seen at their lake house!! So, we can't be too bad around here!! LOL!!

You are welcome, Bortaz. I just hate to see "home" trashed in such a way. Yes, it has it's problems, but compared to a lot of other places, Tyler is nice. Even with the old money!!
Hope that you can get back soon~
