hey everyone...i just started pre-reqs for the nursing program out in chicago but my fiance and i are moving back to AZ next fall...im thinking about going CGCC. how competitive are the AZ nursing programs? the college i am in right now is super competitive. they only accept 3.7 and higher. is that how it is in az, or do they take first people to apply?? i'm still kind of new to the whole program requirements for diff schools! any help is appreciated!! thanks

Community Colleges you have to take an entrance exam. I think the universities is based on GPA only.

thanks, i've only emailed the college i'm thinking about attending and haven't gotten that far into my search of nursing programs yet. the community college i'm attending now is based on GPA, and a point system. unbelievable how competitive this field is just to go to school for it!! hoping for the best though. so the cc's in az, are based on exam?? so the students who score better get in ?? i've been reading about 2 yr waiting lists?!? so you apply and sit and wait for two yrs after you're done with your pre-reqs?

The CC's in AZ are based on a lottery mostly. You need to have the pre-reqs done, score a certain percentage on each required section of the Entrance Exam of the schools choice and have a 2.0-2.75 GPA (GPA varies on program also) Then you submit your application, get an interview and are placed on the waiting list. CC's are pretty much if you meet the quals then you get into the program, its a matter of when your number comes up. They weed you out in the first semester of the program if you can't cut it.

Well, it wasn't a lottery where I went. THey based it on the NLN scores, and the best scores get it. THere was no waiting list where I went to school at. You either get in or you don't. My class started with 80 people and finished with 70. That was in northern arizona tho. Now that I work in Tucson which is southern arizona, i've been hearing about how the community college here in Tucson and Phoenix do have waiting list that are long like a year or two. Your best bet if you want to get in a program quick is to apply at Yavapai college which is in Prescott (that's where I went), or to Coconino Community College which is in Flagstaff. There are no interviews, but Coconino Community College makes you write an essay, Yavapai didn't. Study the NLN and do good, you'll get in right away.

Maricopa County Community Colleges requires certain prerequisites, your NET with a 60% or higher on the reading portion, a 50% or higher on the math portion, a grade of C or better on your prerequisites. Once you are done with the prerequisites and the nurse entrance exam and you have your fingerprint clearance card, you can apply. There are no interviews. You are placed in the pool for the wait. You can select up to five schools, which may better your chance at getting in more quickly. The wait time right now is approximately 3 semesters.
