january 14th 2010 - mountain view hospital las vegas rn's lost their voice and independence today, losing to the california nurses association/nnoc in a 240 to 152 vote. months ago their management accepted a "neutrality agreement" with the labor union. this agreement greatly limits the ability of staff who are against unionizing to educate their coworkers while allowing union organizers and pro-union activists virtual free rein.
how can a fair election be held when nurses and hospital staff are prevented from discussing the realities of unionization? it would seem that the unions need more than the propaganda they spread about the weak and oppressed in order to "win" elections! one nice thing about this is that nevada is a rtw state where the staff can choose whether or not to pay their ridiculous dues. it will be interesting to see how long the glorious union is in vegas when their financial statement starts to sag.....

PICUPNP you usually pooh pooh any attempt to portray the fear that some nurses have of retaliation and / or loss of employment , due to their attempts to stand up to management . But here the NLRB acted after a classic example of management intimidation , so in future it will be hard to sustain your argument that employees should not be scared of possible management retaliation .
The problem is that as you said in a previous post, not all management are bad. The unions want us,RNs, to think that ALL management is bad and that we, RNs, ALL need to be in a union which is absolutely not the case. I don't agree with how management acted in this case, but we can also see that unions don't always operate as professionally as they should.
Why is it that I read over and over about all of these different agreements between the unions and their possible captors that keep the staff and management from mounting a campaign of equal significance? These neutrality agreements are nothing more than censorship. Is this how unions need to operate in order to unionize hospitals? They want to unionize with only a card check and no staff member may speak with management about the union? Come on..thats ridiculous.
We do actually almost agree on one thing ie.that not all Unions or Managements are good or bad , but due to the nature of forums ( need for brevity ) , it usually appears that we glaze over this truth .
