Applying to MSMC's 2011 absn program? Yeah, me too. Just wanted to hearing from others in the same boat.

Hi All,

FYI I received an e-mail from Taylor Univ. this morning stating that PHI 401E Bioethics is unavailable for enrollment currently because they are transitioning between professors. They said that they will e-mail me when they have a new professor.

I live in Manhattan Beach and the commute to MSMC from here is about 1 hour without carpool, with carpool would decrease the commute by a substantial amount of time. Any commuters in my area by chance?

I am looking to move to L.A. and I think I most likely will, but I really wish I could talk to someone who has been through the program to see if that's the best decision.

Hey guys, I'm new to this thread. I too got accepted to MSMC. I am taking my deposit in this Thursday. I am still waiting to hear back from one more school before I make my final decision, so there's a chance I might lose my deposit but I'm still really excited I got in!!! I'm going to join the facebook page now.

As for your question, SomedayIWillBe, my overall GPA was 3.15, but my prereq GPA was higher. I'm not sure how they calculate GPA, but I would say that my GPA isn't all that competitive. It seems they take a lot into consideration, such as letters of rec and personal statement.

If anyone didnt get in this semester, make sure you reactivate for the March deadline. They save all your information and they even waive the 20 dollar fee. All you have to do is update your statement of purpose. I'm sure a lot of reapplicants will get in, since it shows that you're serious. Also, from the informational session, I remember them saying that around 20 alternates end up getting into the program.

Thanks! I appreciate your sharing!

Hey guys, I'm currently in the absn program and I would strongly recommend taking bioethics. You will be able to leave at 12:15 on Tuesdays in your second semester, and you will also have additional time to study for adv med-surg, mental health and Pharm.

Take the advice from someone who's going thru the program!

Btw- bioethics is being offered at Taylor university again!

For those of you who will be starting in May, have you figured out how you are going to pay for this program? Were you offered any financial aid at all? I've applied for the fall but the cost of this program is very intimidating.

You get $20,500 in federal aid, and the rest you have to make up for with private loans. That's the part I'm working on right now. : / I talked to my financial aid counselor today and she told me after your first semester you are eligible to apply for scholarships with 3 hospitals: Kaiser, Northridge and Torrance. If they accept you, they lend you about 25,000 in tuition in exchange for 2 years of employment. It sounds like a good deal because you're guaranteed a job right after graduation if you're lucky enough to be picked, and a previous student on another thread said you can even pick your department. The thing is, it depends on grades so you have to kick ass on your first semester. It is definitely intimidating, but it's only 12 months! Plus they have amazing clinicals. From what I read, you really get your money's worth.

Pauliwankenobi, thanks!!

Paulwankenobi, how do you like the program? I'm really excited about it. Is it hard to maintain good grades?

The programs really not that bad. Yes, you have to study every day, but there's more than enough time to still go out every once in a while. I took bioethics @ Taylor, so that really helped me free up some time.

I'm not a straight-a student (I've only gotten one A- in the program, with the rest of my grades B's) because I don't freak out or pull all-nighters to get A's. Trust me- plenty of people will obsess about getting A's (which is useful if you're applying for a scholarship), but I'm doing well (and I'm completely satisfied with Bs).

You make a lot of friends very quickly, and I would recommend finding some people that you get along with to form study groups. A lot of people end up befriending the people that they live near, which is also useful for carpooling.

Ummm ... as for advice, I would just take it easy. The program will get stressful, but the weeks go by quickly. Be nice to each other, because the more friends you have, the more help you get. Be willing to ask for help if you need it!

I can't believe that were halfway done! It feels like we just started.

Do you have any particular questions besides grades? Plenty of ppl are more than capable of getting good grades!

Hi xluescluesx. Really you get 20,500 in federal aid? Do you have to pay that back? I thought for the second bachelor that there would be no financial aid and just loans.

No it's loans, you do have to pay it. Sorry I meant federal stafford loans. The rest has to be private loans which I'm struggling with because my credit is not too great right now.

Speaking of which, can you break down the tuition for me pauliwankenobi? I know the website says 53k but is that just straight tuition or are they calculating stuff like transportation, insurance, living expenses, etc. I don't know how much aid to ask for. Did any classmates that you know if struggle to get financial aid?

Also, can you tell me which hospitals you've had clinicals at so far and which was your favorite? Were the nurses nice? I hear some of them hate students. Sorry for all the questions, I'm just so nervous/excited.
