Mother Infant Nurse going to FNP school?

Published

I have been a med surg nurse for just over a year now, and although I work with an awesome group of nurses, med surg is not where my heart is. I want to try a new area of nursing, but I also have an end goal of becoming a FNP. There is a job opening at my hospital for Mother Infant nursing and I really want to apply, but I am just wondering if this will hurt my chances of getting into FNP school or not provide me with the experience I need throughout school and once I become a FNP. Any thoughts/ suggestions are appreciated!

It's likely not going to hurt you. It may help you. Don't put off the present for the possibility of the future: if you have an interest, take the job.

I think a Mother/Infant nurse would be a great candidate for FNP.. After all, moms and kids are a big part of the family ;-)

Thanks so much for the responses:)

Just about any nurse in any field is a great fit for an FNP. It's rare for nurses today to see all patient populations, so unless you work in an urgent care, ER, or in a family practice office as an RN, there's going some patient populations you're going to be unfamliar with. Out of my FNP class of 40, only about 4 worked in settings where they were familiar with all patient populations.
