hello~i am a mom to a 2 yr old and 4 yr old and currently taking anatomy. i do not find the class overly hard since it is the only one i am taking but i cannot find any alone time to study and when i do i'm too tired to comprehend. i'm not doing as well as i need to be or could be and it's my own fault. does anyone have any tips for studying with little ones and how to focus?
I have 3 kids and started back when my youngest had just turned 1. Are your kids sound sleepers in the early morning hours? Can you get up early and get half an hour or more of reading out of the way before they get going? I found that I retained what I read in the morning much better than all the late nights spent falling asleep over the book. Also, with anatomy, you have the advantage of bathtime to review all the bones and muscles on your kids. I got in the habit of touching origins and insertions on myself as I read.
At the very least, I can let you know that it's doable. Over 3 years, I got A's in most of my pre-reqs and am an alternate for Spring 09. The most time I ever spent studying in a library was 20 minutes before class started. Sure, it would have been easier to go spend hours of quiet study time, but as a parent, you've gotten used to multi-tasking and persevering despite interruptions. These are valuable nursing skills down the road. Good luck!

Thanks! It really is good to hear that it's doable, I need to hear that...I really need A's. My school is very competitive and A's are my goal. I had all A's on my transcript until I got this horrible Chem teacher and life just started throwing me curve balls. I need to learn how to hit them and keep on going. I have to figure what works best early bedtime/early study or late bedtime/late study. Sometimes I'm soo dead tired by nite time nothing is absorbing so morning study may be better, we'll see. Bathtime is a GREAT idea, I never thought about that. I think I'm going to invest in ear plugs too. Well now I'm off to go do you know what...study!
I have a 15 month old and have gotten nothing but A's so far.
I play with my daughter singing my anatomy information. At night I'll put all the information I need to know on flash cards.
For example:
Say oh "kids name" did you know that your ethmoid bone is right her behind and above your nasal bone? It also holds the olfactory bulb/nerves for smell. If you continue to do this, I guarentee you will begin to get it without staying up all night studying.
Have you considered having a sitdown with hubby and explaining to him your needs? It's only going to get harder once you actually get into nursing school. You'll be gone all day and studying at nights and weekends. You might want to sit down with him and see if your on the same page with what your future goals are as a family. If he wants to see you succeed and go to nursing school, your going to have to explain to him what his part has to be. As soon as I started school I explained to my whole family that we were all going to have to make sacrifices. That meant me, hubby and the kids. (kids have to sacrifice having me available to drive them all over and take all the stuff they left at home to school, etc).
I can really relate because I have a 10 month old and my husband does his best to watch her while I study but I work full-time also so I hardly get to spend time with her so while I study I try to fit time in between to play with her. I have finally just came to the conclusion me shooting for all A's is not going to happen...
I am taking:
A & P 1 (very hard)
Pharmacology
Art
Intro to Nursing
PE

Last spring, just after my son was born (classes started 2 weeks after he was born!), I took anatomy, microbiology, and human development. My mom kept my son 3 nights a week while I had class (my husband didn't get out of work until 6:30-7, and my classes were almost over by then). I studied on my lunch hours (once I went back to work when he was 6 weeks old), I studied after he went to bed for an hour or so, and I told my husband that on Sunday, when he was off work and home, he should consider me not in the house. I would shut myself up in my office and study all day. It was his responsibility to take care of our son on that one day so that I could do my schoolwork. By having uninterrupted time, I'd usually only need like 10am-3pm to do all my studying/reading/etc for the week, and I'd have the evening to spend with my husband and son. It's tough, but even with an infant wanting to eat every 2 hours, I managed to study enough for the 10credits I was taking to 4.0 in every class.

Congrats on your excellent accomplishment!
I remember taking those pre-req science classes. I have 3 kids and the best way for me was to leave the house since that is a distraction. It seems as if there is always something that can be done (dishes, laundry, vacuuming, etc). I usually went/go to Starbucks (an uncrowded one) and study there. I also did the digital voice recorder in AP classes, that helps during the drive to wherever you may be going. Flashcards you can carry around in your purse to study whenever you have a few extra minutes waiting around. Hope that helps and good luck!

That is totally my problem...the whole house is a distraction. I'm definitely going to use the "get out of the house advice." And I love flashcards! Thanks!
