Hello everyone, I am 25 and a hard working mother of 2. My children of 2 and 4 have grown up so much already right before my eyes. I feel know is the best time to go back to school and become an LVN. I was so excited that the fire to learn and go to school was once more ignited. I had put school aside since my babies and work. So I anxiously decide to take the first step and call Kaplan college. I spoke to a gentleman and he asked about why I wanted to start school. As soon as I mentioned my children in the conversation his whole attitute changed. He automatically directed me to an "easier" program wich was the Patient Care Tecnician. As if I was less to pursue being An LVN because of my 2 amazing kids. He said the Patient Care Technician was also cheaper and requiredred Less study time.

Specializes in M/S, LTC, Corrections, PDN & drug rehab.

Why don't you go to a community college to become an LVN? It will be cheaper than going to Kaplan.

Thats a good idea. That was my very first step towards anything LVN. I will definetly look into my options. He said it would cost around 34,8000.0

Holy dog tails! That's more than my brand new car cost. That's ridiculous. You would save so much money by going to a community college. There is no reason to go through Kaplan. If you have any questions definitely come here, this is a great resource.

Wow that's a ton of money. Also as an LVN the school was really hard (time wise). I have an amazing support system hubby, mil, and 2 sisters to help with the kids. It was super stressful. I think that much money for an LVN would have made much harder.

I know! I just looked into my community college its 1,800 !!!!!!!!! Know im just wondering if hes right about not being able to handle the work load :/

What school did u go to?

You might not think you will be able to handle it but I'm sure you can do it. Especially when you look at your two babies at night. That's enough motivation as any. :)

DO NOT doubt yourself. Something ignited that fire in you to go to school, wether it was to have a wonderful career, for your kids or husband to be proud of you (not saying they are not) or to just have a better quality of life for your family, you need to go after what you want. I am in your shoes, I don't have kids and am not married, but have a long term boyfriend whom I live with, and I have decided to stop putting things off and go after my dream of becoming a RN. I let negative people tell me I couldn't do it, or that it was too hard and for a long time I believed it. Don't let ANYONE tell you you can't do something. You go out there, and not matter how long it takes you, you go do it!

Best of luck to you!

Specializes in Education, FP, LNC, Forensics, ED, OB.

Thread moved to Pre-Nursing.

That had to be a blow to you when he said that.

Yes, you can do it. Wishing you much good luck as you pursue Practical Nursing.

Look for cheaper options. I paid less than 4000 including most of my equipment and all of my uniforms

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

Many of the so-called 'admissions counselors' at investor-owned schools play the switch-and-bait game with prospective students who walk through their doors. When a prospective student inquires about one program, the 'admissions counselor' attempts to steer the student into a less popular program.

Then, when the student graduates and cannot find employment, the friendly 'admissions counselor' will attempt to steer the same student into another program, thereby double-dipping and generating more tuition dollars.

This is the most compelling reason you'd have to stay far away from investor-owned schools. They're in it for the almighty dollar, not for the education of their students.
