Hi. This is my first post and I was wondering something. I got a externship this summer in the MNSICU at our University hospital and now I am scared. I am supposed to graduate with my ADN in December and I want to know what exactly happens with externships. I have never worked in a hospital except for clinicals. They said I will be with a preceptor and follow her around then move into doing things too. I was wondering if this is going to be the excellent learning experience that I hope it is. I think that I will learn a tremendous amount of stuff and they said if they like me I can stay. Thanks for listening and I would appreciate any input you all may have since you have experience.

I am assuming an externship is kinda like role transition where a soon to be graduating or graduated student comes into the field with a preceptor and works.
I think it is an awesome idea...and I wish they had done that when I went to school. I think it really gives you a chance to get your hands dirty and still have solid guidance from a nurse who is dedicated to you.
Congrats adn I hope you have a fabulous time.
They said I would have a preceptor all summer and be doing things along with the nurse. I think that this should be awesome experience. Thank you for you reply
