MNA and Nurses Respond to the Killing of George Floyd by Police

As a nurse, what is your first reaction as you hear those words?

Updated:

We have all seen on the news the terrible scene that played out in the streets in Minnesota when George Floyd, an unarmed 46-year-old black male, was arrested by the Minnesota Police for attempted forgery at a convenience store. The action was caught on video as George Floyd, handcuffed and pinned to the ground face down by an officer who pressed with his full weight with his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck for more than 8 minutes. We watched and heard George Floyd crying out that he couldn't breathe. We heard him calling for "Mama". We watched as his body went limp with the officer still holding him down. This will be a scene I shall never forget.

The following are quotes from the Minnesota Nurses Association's response to this heinous crime.

Quote

As nurses, we see the horrific effects of racism in our hospitals and community every day. We cannot remain silent as yet another black man has died at the hands of police...

Quote

George Floyd's last words were "I can't breathe.” George Floyd died shortly after arriving at the hospital."

Nurses jump into action when they hear someone say "I can't breathe", instead of standing there watching them die. Their goal is to save lives, not kill people

Quote

In the case of George Floyd, Minneapolis Police took no care or life-saving measures. Instead, they left him pinned down to the ground until paramedics arrived. Police ignored the pleas of George Floyd and he died.

Nurses care for all patients, regardless of their gender, race, religion or other status. We expect the same from the police. Unfortunately, nurses continue to see the devastating effects of systematic racism and oppression targeting people of color in our communities. We demand justice for George Floyd and a stop to the unnecessary death of black men at the hands of those who should protect them.

As a nurse, or as a compassionate human, how has this horrific event affected you? We have seen protests (some peaceful and some that have erupted into riots), vandalism, looting, and more. What is going on in your community? What actions can nurses take?

Let us stand together and let our voices be heard. Post your comments below.

I don't think Rittenhouse should of been there either. Yes, he was a child and shouldn't of been engaging in that type of activity let alone with a weapon. I don't think that even a BLM 17yr old should be out late at night. I think it was wrong for grown adult business owners to praise this child for "helping defend them". They should of told him to go home.

He got into a situation where he was attacked and killed two people. You could tell he was retreating and running away, yet they still went after him. Looks like he went from a tough kid wanting to protect, to a scared kid who was in fear of his life (having a weapon doesn't mean that you are not scared for your life).

Can't have it both ways. That is why I don't think children should be involved in those things. If you want to voice yourself do a tiktok video

still, a no-knock raid for suspicion of having ties with a drug dealer is an abuse of power and should have never occurred IMO

So do you think that a no knock warrant looking for Pelosi laptop is OK?

I agree, a 17 year old shouldn’t have needed to be outside defending anything. We had police and national guard on scene, but they were both ordered to stand down or just powerless and severely outnumbered. I personally believe they should have been more aggressive and active at curtailing protests when they became out of control riots, and I wished legitimate protestors did a better job at self policing opportunists and agitators out of their assemblies.

however, the police and NG declared Kenosha a riot and ordered everyone off the streets, legitimate protestors, rioters, and people out protecting businesses, so I agree, rittenhouse should have also cleared out. Instead, though, several people threatened him, and when he tried to retreat, they continued to chase him, used weapons against him, and he responded by defending himself.

Depends on if it is a personal laptop, or a government property laptop with potentially sensitive information on it. Use of government power to protect national security is more acceptable to me than raiding and murdering acquaintances of suspected drug dealers.

Why is this thing still going.  It's sucking the life out of this forum.  One thing we can do to stop the vitriol coming from voices of hate is DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

Shut this down PLEASE.  This is not a matter of one speaking their first amendment right....this is downright hate and flagrant racism.  AN why do you allow this to continue?!?!?!

I once took a 9 year break from this site because of this kind of nonsense.  Coming back recently, I just don't know.  I am a NURSE.  This is completely of track.  How about people save this crud for facebook or Twitter?

I felt the same about the Joe Biden one. That is why I expressed that sentiment and then stop looking or adding to it.

And especially for you DesiDani, I am SORRY.  SORRY you have to read this bunch of hate.  I am just flabbergasted by what I read in this thread.  NO ONE should speak to anyone the way you are spoken to.  I HEAR YOU.  I SEE YOU.  I LOVE YOU.  YOU MATTER (and you know that means BLACK LIVES MATTER).  And I am doing everything I can to help others hear you.  I use my voice and my actions as example.  But not here, man.  I feel like some people here are not reachable....downright white supremacists and flippin proud of it and without shame!  And that this site allows this to happen is pathetic.

Be well and take care.

I didn't see any hate, just strong opinions. Everyone has the right to their opinions. If you post your opinion, don't be put off if people respond in kind. I love a good chat. That's why I'll miss Y!A. Granted you have to skip over the children past their bedtime some people do have interesting things to say and it makes you think. I feel AllNurses has a lot of that here.

I personally am not quick to call people white supremacist either. I mean to be honest all white people are WS to an extent. Yes, that does mean liberals and Democrats. Too many people are quick to point the finger or latch devise terms on to others while totally ignoring the faults within their own ranks.

Besides trying to change someone by calling them names or "owning them" is not an effective way to go. There is a black man who is famous for talking to a KKK leader. They called him oreo, sellout, and a Tom. Now that KKK leader is no longer in the klan and is good friends with the black guy. If you prod too much, people will just go underground and their beliefs will be engrained deeper.

Sure it may take time for some, but I feel that people don't even try. They immediately go with the shunning and the hate. This doesn't help and only helps feeds the hateful messages that their recruiters spill.

"You see how they treat you? We are your friends. Not them"

Honestly, I feel like this thread should be in a different section of the forum and it’s gone wildly off topic, but I am enjoying having a discussion with you. I feel like it’s been civil and open.

That's because I'm not enjoying my chai tea and spinach/bacon souffle  at Panera Bread. Then it'll be civil and short after I put my earbuds on.

I agree it is nice to have civil chat.

Police in NZ do not routinely do not carry guns.

3 August 2015

Since 1941, 29 people have been fatally shot by police

Do you accept that Police work must be so much harder in the USA due to this gun law?

Em nope.  All cops carry tasers and police were routinely carrying guns after the Christchurch shooting.  All cops now have a glock and an M4 locked in their cars.

Our armed offenders carry really big guns
