MN EC students/grads

Published

Hello everyone! I have been lurking around this site for the past 2 weeks...so much info!! I have applied to EC and started studying for Health Safety prior enrolling. After reading all of the info on GA and VA I am nervous about my EC degree not being accepted. I called the BON and they said that as long as NY accepts EC, then they will too. I checked the list on istudysmart.com and MN does not have any stipulations listed. I work through Fairview and they said that they will reimburse.

SOOO, my questions to you are...If you are an EC grad here in MN, did you have any problems finding jobs with an EC degree? Has anybody heard or know about any changes in the works for MN BON denying EC degrees? Did any EC grads get hired on at one of the Fairview Hospitals?

I apologize for all of the questions, but I just want to make sure I do my research BEFORE paying a bunch of money out. Thanks for your help!

Jennifer- I believe that if you got the go-ahead from your BON, and your hospital is willing to reimburse your tuition, you should be fine. Your employer is willing to reimburse you in the hopes that you stay with them once you have your RN. Although I'm in a different state, I got reimbursed from my employer when I did the program, and they gladly offered me a RN position when I was done. I say go for it.

EC grads from GA usually apply to MN for NCLEX because they have the fastest processing times and very little paperwork required compared to some states. I say If you live in MN go for it they seem to be very EC friendly!

Please keep in mind that the board can change their decision to accept Excelsior degrees at any time. I started the program in 2003 and watched as many boards made changes to how they accept EC. Some states have banned them. Personally, I would just go to traditional school if it was at all possible. The publicity around this program is growing everyday--and not good publicity in the eyes of the public. I graduated in 2005. I liked the program but certainly don't like all these restrictions.

I'm in MN as well. Done with the EC tests and just waiting for my CPNE date as of right now. EC was the only feasable way I could get my RN at this point in my life, I needed to continue to be able to work and still be there for my family. Before I started EC I emailed the MN BON asking if they had any hesitations about the online RN programs. She wrote back and stated they did not have a problem with it. Granted that could change any time... but I don't know what else to say about that. Her response was good enough for me. Now that I'm getting closer to being done, I have sent emails to a few companies in MN, asking if they have any problems with EC degrees and most of them state that they have positions for RN's with various levels of experience and they are sure they could find positions for new grads whether they used traditional or nontraditional schools. They encouraged me to send in my resume as well. I would look up the HR dept at the Fairview you are considering and send them an email asking what they think about it. I have always gotten a response back from the ones I wrote to! I know quite a few EC nurses in MN and WI. One works in Internal Medicine (fairview), one in PACU, one has her Master's and does teaching programs now... one works in L&D (mayo), one is a DON at a nsg home. No one that I have heard of has problems finding a job! Hope that will apply to me as well. Hope this helps-- feel free to send me an email if you'd like to keep in touch.

Sara

thanks everyone! I also emailed my DON today to ask what she thought. congrats Sara on being this close and good luck at the CPNE...the other area of concern for me but I think with all the support on here, yahoo, and different workshops I can do it!!
