Mission field:med/surg or ER?

Published

I am pre-req nursing student and eventually desire to go overseas to work as a nurse in third world countries. What form of nursing would teach me what I would need for what I would want to do?

P.S. I have learned much just from reading the posts on this site. Thanks!

hi, timinchrist,

check out this thread https://allnurses.com/forums/f74/medical-missions-trips-113186.html?highlight=missions

the above is found in the volunteer nursing forum. there are discussions about some requirements and different entities.

I'd go with the ER...there you'll see everything and more. Like what? Bugs in the ears, allergic reactions to meds/bug bites/drugs/etc, broken bones, traumas, burns, sprained ankles, strep throat, domestic violence, rape, heart preoblems, babies with high fevers of unknown origin, high blood pressure, strokes, psych. emergencies, etc etc etc.

Med/Surg, you might be confined to a certain type ie--mostly renal, or mostly cardiac, and def. a mostly adult pop. And it'll all be things that were bad enough to hospitalize a Pt. In the ER at least you'll see how things are taken care of on an out patient basis...how docs decide who to admit vs. who to treat and release, etc.
