Military spouse...so many questions

Published

Hey everyone! I'm new to this forum but excited that hopefully I'll "meet" someone to answer my millions of questions.

So first off, a bit about me. I'm just starting out with all my nursing and extra science classes although I have all my general education classes finished. In June 2010, I'm marry my love who is graduating from West Point and will first be stationed in Ft. Leonard Wood for 6-12 months. Does anyone know of a good school close by there?

Also I'm trying to determine the difference between going for my associate's or bachelor's degree right off. Should I focus on my RN certification for right now so I can start working and maybe do an online RN-BSN program later?

My fiance and I are also considering taking the opportunity to move to Italy or Germany as well. The one thing I'm concerned about is my ability to finish up my degree as I'll probably have about one or two semesters to go by the time we would move over there. Does anyone have any information about that sort of thing? Does the military have any special programs?

Well I guess that's all for now. Any insight anyone might have would be awesome! Thanks!

Courtney3908,

Can you tell me a little bit about Lincoln University? I'm considering it, but don't have a lot of information on it. Is it a good school, as far as teaching, what you are learning, etc.? I would love to hear more about it. If you want, you can email me at [email protected]. :)

I am currently living in Waynesville, MO (which is right outside of Ft. Leonard Wood) I am not in the military I actually moved here from FL for the Nursing program they have on post in the Truman Education center offered by Lincoln University. I would definately recommend you get your RN since you will be moving...but if your only here for 6-12mo then you may just want to wait until you get to your duty station unless you are able to transfer your nursing credits elsewhere. I haven't had any issues with the school yet and I actually like it, they offer night classes which works great for me since I work during the daytime. I wish you the best of luck, maybe we can meet up once you get here and study... :)

Sorry for my slow reply...just saw your post. My husband and I are coming down this week and will be stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood through Jan. '11. I am taking A&P at the Truman Center (Lincoln University) and doing the CNA certification at the Waynesville Career Center. Are you still there? Taking any classes?

Hey, i start taking my pre-reqs @ Lincoln in Jan, to start the nursing program in the fall, is anyone there now or starting?!

I am just getting back to waynesville after being gone for a while but I am looking for a study partner, I already have my pre reqs but would love to help you study and be brushed up for the fall semester. Let me know if you would like to study together.

You will have to check with your school, but at mine, nursing students can take the CNA exam after their first semester of nursing school. Many people work as CNA's before becoming a nurse.

I just did exactly that - now comes the 'finding a job' part. Also, depending on your state, you may be able to work under the title of 'student nurse' (pretty much the same thing as a CNA) but without having to go through the CNA testing/licensing process...I only did it as back up insurance because I am going to try to find CNA work, but as a student nurse (without a CNA license), if something happens and you can't finish nursing school - the facility can basically pull the plug on your employment. If you have the CNA license, you can remain working there while you regroup and devise another game plan.

Hey Camwill, I would LOVE to! I could use all of the help that I could get! I am taking Bio and Eng this semester, and then HA&P and Alg over the summer, which should put me ahead of the curve for the fall semester, e-mail me and we can tlk particulars, could so use all the help I could get. My wrk email is [email protected] and personal is [email protected] if you want to email me after wrk hrs...

So I just called LU and am in a state of confusion! I need Nutrition before the start of the nursing program, and I refuse to wait a whole yr for one class! So would it be better to take it now, along with Bio and Eng, or over the summer with A&P and maybe Alg? (If i pass the math placement test I can test out of the Alg I was going to take over the summer)... Im not sure how difficult the classes are, so I would appreciate someone's advice...
