Midnight Dr. Call.

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I will be graduating in a couple of weeks. I was wondering when is it appropriate to call a doctor in the middle of the night?

Your experience and ideas are appreciated.:balloons:

Groggy......oh yes!! My own doc has come into the ER in the morning and told me "The night shift called me about admitting a pt but I can't remember who they said it was, or what was wrong!"

While in preterm labor, I was hospitalized multiple times. Once I was in the hospital for a couple of days, and at 3 am my doc literally smashes into my room, wide-eyed, breathless and groggy, then just kind of stops, looks around, then looks at me, and says, "Uh, what's going on? Did you get an epidural or something?" I say, "Uhh, no. I was just sleeping." And he says, "Well, you sure don't look like someone who's in hard labor." and I say, "Well, I'm not really even having very many contractions, I don't think I'm in hard labor at all." and he says, "uhhh, wait a minute," turns and stumbles out to the nurses station.

The nurse comes in about 10 minutes later laughing her a$$ off, and told me that he dreamed they called him and frantically told him I was in hard labor progressing fast and that he needed to get to the hospital ASAP (I was around 32 weeks at the time, and the hospital wasn't really equipped for a baby that young, it was a really small hospital). So he jumped out of bed, threw on his scrubs and raced down at 90 miles an hour, ran up the stairs cause he didn't want to wait for the elevator, and sprinted past the nurses station without even stopping to see what was going on before he burst into my room. Poor guy. He was very sheepish the next time he came to check on me.
