Hello Everyone!
I just started Microbiology this Summer semester. I took my first exam today and I FAILED. :[ I have a GPA of 3.66 and I am hoping that I won't have to drop the class. We only have two exams & a final, 5 quizzes, 2 lab practicals, & two reports. I am wondering if this has happened to anyone else & how did everything turn out.
Thanks a lot.

Definitely look up in your syllabus for how much of your final grade this exam respresents.
If your poor grade was due to too many other commitments, like too many classes, work, home responsibilities, etc, then withdraw. The bad grade isn't worth it.
Otherwise, there IS hope! Start going to the instructor's office hours on a regular basis and find out where you went wrong. Make a study group in your class. It is possible to improve! My first microbiology lab test was like that, too...then I got my butt in gear and improved.
I don't have many commitements. I do all my work & I study religiously on an everyday basis. But I emailed my professor and I will see what she has to say. I have until Jun. 25th to withdraw. I can afford to make A's & B's on everything else and come out fine, I believe. I will post my syllabus when I get home later.
Thanks, btw.

If your teacher sounds positive and helpful, I wouldn't give up just yet, You could still potentially do well in the class if you really ace the rest of the assignments.
I would make a final decision at the last minute (drop date). Think carefully, because you will need Micro for nursing anyways.Good luck.

I also just took my micro test(only 3 total in semester) and did poorly, I do not want to drop the class as it is neccessary for the nursing program, I am going to put in more effort for the next two, and try to do well on my papers and lab notebook, hopefully that will be enough to pull me through.

The first ever AP lab I did very poorly on...and actually ran out crying but wound up with an A in the course so you may do fine...

I thought I was the only one to run out of my first ap lab! :) I withdrew, took it again and got an A- and I def. failed a couple of the tests we had- it's all about how you're going to make it up, it's about all the grades as a whole, not just one test- however I am going to go back and review/ study the tests that I didn't do well on only because I'm going to have to know it for ap II and on the job. But it all depends on the teacher too, he wanted to see us do well and gave us an extra make-up quiz when we didn't do well on the first one. Anyway, it can def work out, don't give up!

Don't give up hope! Try talking with your instructor during his office hours or whenever he's available. Our class was a little different from yours - we just had 4 exams and in the lab we had 3 or 4 quizzes and 1 practical (final) exam. the lab is 25% of the lecture grade. I studied and read the book A LOT as well as doing questions at the end of each chapter - it really helped me get a grasp on things. Best of luck! Microbiology can be tough :|

I think it is better to take science prerequisites during "regular" semesters, not during short summer semester. I tried taking one science class during summer semester, and realized that it was not the best idea... But if you think you can do it, you should stick to it, but if you are having second thoughts and the deadline to withdraw is coming up, you will need to make a right decision very soon.
good luck!

I took microbiology last semester - and I too failed my first exam. But I also had a better idea of how the Prof layed out her tests. I ended up getting a B in the class. Ask the Prof for her input - or find out if they have tutoring on the campus. Good luck.
