Micro or AP1.... WWYD?

Published

Hello fellow pre-NS students! Here's my situation. I have applied to a nursing program for Fall 2010. This program allows you to take AP1, AP2 and Micro during your nursing program. I want to get as much done beforehand as possible (assuming I get in for this Fall) so I am planning to take one of these classes this summer. I can only take one since I will be working FT and have a 2 year old. If you could only take one (especially as a summer session), which would you take - AP1 or Micro? I'm kind of leaning towards micro since from what I am reading AP is a lot of memorization and I'd probably like a full semester for that, but I could be wrong. Maybe it's better to get AP done before starting any nursing classes. I need to get A's b/c I plan to attend graduate school. Thanks for you help!

The curriculum the first semester is Nursing Fundamentals, Medical Terminology, AP1 and college math. Second sem is adult heath, AP2, and a psychology class. I asked before I applied if the sciences ahead of time is worth waiting for and I was advised that students follow their full curriculum successfully all the time so I went for it. Also, I don't know for sure yet if I am in, but I am using the power of my words to speak as though I have already been accepted.:D

I took A&P1 in the summer and it wasn't bad for me. I got an A while working full time and taking a Psy class. I would suggest taking Micro in the summer though. It's A LOT easier than A&P and a lot more fun!

it depends on how you study. if you are good at memorization under a short time period than maybe anatomy over the summer would be good for you. personally, i would recommend microbio for a summer course. less time consuming outside of the classroom. with your busy schedule you may benefit more from microbio over the anatomy course. plus, you could then take anatomy during the semester as a sequential course without it being interrupted by microbio!

good luck!

I vote for taking Micro over the summer. Like everyone has said, A&P involves a LOT of memorization. Best to give yourself time during a semester instead of trying to cram it all into your head over a summer session, while still effectively parenting your little one.

Good luck, and congrats on getting into a program! :)

Starting nursing school without A&P beforehand is just WRONG ... :D ... it's like starting law school without having taken English Composition.

It sounds like a differently-structured program. Look at the other classes she has listed that they expect her to take at the same time: "college math", psychology, etc... stuff that was part of my general ed. Lucky she found something like this, I say! (Maybe I'd be a nurse today -- 30 years later -- if my school had operated this way!) Maybe this is another way a school has found to move students into/through nursing school more quickly? Or maybe this is a private school -- I can see that.
