Hello Michigan.....Sterling Heights here.

Have a few questions?

-Did you complete all your prereqs before entering excelsior?

-Do they wave any courses for LPN's?

-How was the admission process?

-How do you like the program so far? What type of study material are you using?

If would be great to network with you all.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS....

I have been thinking on this program for a while and I believe it is best for my situation. I believe if you are a self-starter and can learn on your on than this my be just right for you. I know that only one test is waived if you are a LPN. I do not believe that the application process is hard at all the only drawback is the cost 895. I have finished most of my pre-req and have only 4 to finish. I just ordered study group 101 notes as well as Lisa Arends which you may find on E-bay. There are so many wonderful people on all nurses.com distance forum that are willing to help and provide guidance which to me is invaluable. I live in the downriver area and I am working on trying to form a michigan support group for us to lean on each other with encouragement and support. This program can be done and I have seen many who have completed which provides me with momentum. I just feel that you have to make up in your mind if this is the right move for you and stick with it. The rest to me will fall in place. Whatever you decide peace be with you and If you need any more info I will be glad to offer If I know it.:yeah:

Please excuse any anger/hostility I may have in this post!! A little frustrated right now with Excelsior!!

-Did you complete all your prereqs before entering excelsior? - I believe I had about half of the pre-req's completed. I quickly learned that I could not self-study while working full time (Mon-Fri). I ended up enrolling in online courses for Sociology, Developmental Psych and Humanities. It was also very important to me to take Microbiology in person and that was my last requirement (besides CPNE). I took that at a local community college.

-Do they wave any courses for LPN's? On the old curriculum they waived NC 2.. Not sure what that is equivalent in new.

-How was the admission process? $75-100 for them to provide you with an official review. They will let you know what courses you need.

-How do you like the program so far? What type of study material are you using? The program has both positive/negative. It's not widely accepted over here on the west side. I'm nervous about not being clinically competent and honestly don't feel like I "know" much more..but that's me! It did allow me to work full-time for the majority of this program. I would say most Excelsior students rave about their experience! I used The College Network Modules purchased on ebay and received "B"s on those exams. I failed one with a "D" and swore off of the TCN books. I used the older editions of the recommended texts and got "A's".

Erin thanks for your post. what is your frustration with the program?

My co-worker just completed the program, she completed it in a year in a half; she did it working fulltime and three kids. She studied on her own using recommended books by excelsior, purchased their practice tests and gathered what she could from ebay. She practiced at home, setting up stations for each task to be tested on like an IV station and wound care; she timed her self and practiced her documentation. She passed the practical exam in NY, on her first try, she admitted it was very intense, her advise was to prepare yourself by creating a mock clinical lab at home and practice. We have to be really dedicated for this...I am very unsure, lacking the motivation for self study. On the other hand after working in nursing for 11 yrs I don't think I have the tolerance to complete clinicals and all the crap in traditional nursing school. My only benefit is that I have completed most of the basic requirements.
