Michigan license vs Minnesota

Published

So I am a canadian RN looking to apply to write my NCLEX and work in Michigan.

I have tried to look for information to explain if I write my Michigan board could I travel and work in florida? or do I need to write my Minnesota board. What states to these licenses allow you to work in? Thanks for any input!!!

Each US state licenses and regulates the practice of nursing within its own borders. You would need a Florida license to be able to practice nursing in Florida. The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) is an exception to that, in that the participating states have agreed to recognize each other's licenses for work purposes, but Florida, Michigan, and Minnesota are not members of the NLC, so that wouldn't apply to your situation.

The only other exception is that Federal government facilities are not regulated by the states, and set their own standards. Federal facilities (military hospitals and clinics, VA hospitals and clinics, federal primary health clinics) will accept a license from any US state, not necessarily the state in which the facility is physically located. You could work in a VA or military facility in FL with a MI or MN license. Of course, that would significantly limit your employment opportunities.
