So, why are you asking? Are you a student, patient, family of a patient, or nurse?

I agree with roser13. Google it. Or look it up in your textbook. Would have been quicker than posting on here.

I will assume you are a layperson asking as this is a very basic question so my answer is focused toward the same. Metabolism is all those chemical reactions that happen in your body to make energy, store it and allow you to do all those amazing human things and keep you alive. when those get messed up due to disease, dehydration etc it can either cause a basic (alaki) or acidic state. you normal body pH 7.35-7.45 drops below 7.35 you enter a state of acidosis. There is two kinds of acidosis, Respiratory or Metabolic. depending if it's a breathing problem or to make it simple an energy/chemical elimination problem. in Metabolic acidosis, you body will try an counteract the imbalance by eliminating acid via the respiratory system. It does this by eliminating CO2 and Ketones (by-products of anaerobic respiration) by breathing really fast. this is seen commonly in diabetics who's blood sugar gets really high.
