Im looking to apply for Merced college's nursing program for this fall as well as other nursing schools in my area. I've been having trouble finding any reviews on here about their program! Has anyone here been in or applied to their nursing program? Any information you have is greatly appreciated! Thanks :)
Hi guys,I currently reside in Orange County, CA and took all my prerequisites over here at two different schools. Beginning in February I took a couple of trips from here to Merced to satisfy their application criteria, met with counselors, and obtained proper signatures. The 6hr drive there and back was super stressful considering I am taking an EMT course, work 30 hours a week as a Special Ed aide, and 20 hours as a caregiver to a client that has Cerebral Palsy. This morning after what seemed like an eternity of waiting I received two letters of correspondence from Merced and my hands grew instantly very sweaty as I pulled them out of the mailbox, after recognizing the Merced logo. I opened both letters and unfortunately the first letter informed me that I was NOT selected for both their FALL 2016 and Spring 2017 session, however; the letter went on to explain that although I had not been selected to start the program but that I was selected as an alternative and placed on the alternative list. The second letter has instructions of completing some slip with a "I will attend the mandatory orientation" or "I will not attend". It explains that if I do not attend that I will lose my alternative spot and removed from the list.
My questions are what are the odds of being selected from the alternative list to start that given term? Do a lot of applicants get placed on the alternative list? Should I bother making the long drive there if there is probably a great chance of not being chosen or should I just apply next year instead? Does anyone know anyone in the program that can give a probability of selection from the alternative list?
Super bummed and stressed here
Hope you guys got in though!
I was picked as an alternate last year, and I was extremely low on the list, like #19. At the orientation I moved up a lot, I think to #10, because a bunch of people didn't even show. This past Jan, the director called me and told me to get my shots and get ready because I had moved up to #2 and get ready just in case. And of course, everyone showed up so I didn't get in.
I've applied 3 times to Merced; the first year I didn't get in at all, second accepted as an alternate, and this year I FINALLY just got my acceptance for Spring '17. My advice is definitely come to the orientation because you never know where you are on the alternate list and there's a chance you could get in. There's really no way to know your odds or chances because it depends on the applicant pool, who got accepted elsewhere, who doesn't turn in paperwork, etc. But there's always a chance! Alternate list is not necessarily a rejection. And if you still don't get in, apply next year, could be your year. :) Keep trying! Finally worked for me. Good luck!

You found out you were 19th before orientation? How? I am on the waitlist but not sure on my number.

I believe at the orientation; at least that I had moved to #10, and then when they called me in January and told me to get my shots done and get ready just in case, she mentioned I had moved all the way from #19 to #2 overall.
I think you may get an idea of where you are at the orientation, I would say DEFINITELY go and at least see.
On a side note, I wasn't even able to attend the orientation as I was out of state, but a friend of mine had been accepted and was attending, and I emailed the director and told her my situation. She told me I was so low on the list to not even worry about it, and if the time ever did come that I had moved up enough to be accepted, she would give me any info I needed. Basically, she was (politely) being realistic for me, which I appreciated. But to those that got accepted as an alternate and debating whether or not to even go, GO. You CAN move up, anything is possible.

Ah, alright. Yeah, I am going to go. I just pray that I get in. I want this so bad.

Thank you! When I got that letter I wasn't even going to bother going to the orientation but if there's still a chance then I'll go for it!
