Mental Health Clinical Rotation

I just started my one month clinical rotation at an acute mental health unit and I absolutly love it. For some reason, I did not think that I would that much but it is completely different. Finally I think I know what field of nursing I want to go into (Most of my classmates already seem to know what type of nursing they want to do, and I did not, till now).

I guess I just wanted to let everyone know.

good luck to you...I am a newly finished first year student who had my mental health rotation this year and absolutely loved it. I knew I would since psychology has always fascinated me...stick with it if it's what you really want to do...and don't let anyone kid you too bad about being a "Psych" nurse...I think it's the greatest!

I'm with ya'll I absolutely loved psych! I think this is for me but, I want to do med surg for a while 1st. I am getting ready to start 3rd semester & just hope & pray I make it! Looking foward to May 2006!!

Congrats-we Need More Like You. I've Been In Psych Over 20 Yrs. And I Can Promise You Will Never Be Bored, You'll Work Very Hard And You'll Touch People's Lives In A Very Special Way. Good Luck!

As I said before,I absolutely loved it! I just finished myfirst year and am looking to get an aide or tech position in a mental health unit to get my foot in the door. At the end of every day of my rotation I always felt like I had made a difference, and it was the best feeling I ever had! I wantto go on after my RN and specialize in Psych nursing...possibly a CNS or NP...either way I will be doing what I love...some people tell you it's not REAL nursing, but I take great offense to that...any time you change someone's life for the better, it is nursing, and I am proud to be among the ranks!

Congrats! I'm glad you found something you really enjoy.

When i was going through all my clinicals, i dreaded going to the hospital each shift. I would debate whether to call in sick, and was beginning to wonder if nursing was for me.

My last rotation was psych; adolescent pysch, actually. i was really nervous, convinced i wouldn't be able to handle it since there is a lot of stuff in my family life that i thought would make psych nursing too much for me, emotionally. However, it's the rotation i enjoyed the most! The only one i looked forward to going to. So when time came to chose my consolidation placement, psych was my first choice. Luckily, i got it and am now working on the most acute ward (ADS; admission, diagnosis, and stabilization unit) at a psych hospital, and i'm already updating my resume to hand in, hoping to get a job there when i graduate.

Anyways..lol sorry, that was kind of off topic...
