I would like any input or info on what they have heard about men being a school nurse (Middle thru High School). I have a BSN with 8yrs MedSurg an Critical Care experience. Also, are school nurses allowed to become part of the coaching staff in school athletics? Thank you for your help.

Yes there are male school nurses. You could check with NASN to find out how many are members of the national organization http://www.nasn.org
Yes I know school nurses that coach. One problem I see with coaching if a school nurse full time with the expectation of school hours coverage of the health office is traveling for away games that require leaving before classes are over.

My name is Jason and I have been a school nurse for about 4 years. I work for the largest school in south east asia. I can truthfully say that there are no male school nurses in asia except me. It's a great job and I would want to this for the rest of my life. I'm not sure about the whole coaching thing, but I can ask the people in life skills. My email here is [email protected] if you have any other questions.

What a coincidence! Just the other day, I was talking to my brother-in-law who is a retired school principal. He was telling me about a man he worked with once who was both a school nurse and assistant coach of the football team. My brother-in-law said he was one of the best school nurses he ever worked with.
This was in Pennsylvania and it would have been several years ago.

I am taking one of my recertification classes and there are 2 male nurses in my class. I think that they add a wonderful component to school nursing. I was so happy to see them there. As for being part of a coaching staff, that is a WONDERFUL idea. I think that any school would be blessed to have an RN on their coaching staff. The time has certainly come and is long over due! Follow your dreams. You'll be terrific. Good Luck!

I have been an elementary school nurse for 13 years. I think it''s a great idea. Of the >1,000 school nurses listed in Indiana, there are only 3 fulltime male RNs that I'm aware of.
Many school systems will allow anyone coach. It's a matter of school policy. It's good money in my district.

Welcome John! Glad to have you on the School Nurse forum. We had one male nurse in my district last year, but unfortunately he did not return. We really did appreciate the male POV and perspective in our meetings.

I was a school nurse at the American International School in Dhaka, Bangladesh for 4 years untill June. 2009. I was pretty popular with the kids and known as "Mr. Nurse." I had a great going away speech by a senior who said he noticed this big guy with tattoos one day on campus (I was working out) and then saw me when he went to the clinic.
