Do men have an easier time getting accepted to nursing school since it's a female dominated field? My husband will be applying in the spring, and his grades are low for some of the schools he's considering. I'm just wondering if being male may help. Thanks!
To accept your husband with low grades over a woman with higher grades would be sexism; let alone against the law. I doubt any school admits their students because of sex, especially those that select their students by merit. I doubt any school would get away with it, at least not for very long.
The very way your reply is written in condescending, it is sad that in this age and era we still have Americans like you, who have this feeling of "us" and them
I pray God you never ever become part of an admission committee.
Your attitude is high handed and lofty.
There is no difference in the blood, only the skin has more melanin to be precise.
No one would be stupid enough to include screeners like color or race, they do it in the class, where they fail those who they do not like , They come up with explanations like " being born with critical thinking " skills , all these things are used to maintain the status quo!

:down:Whoa. Hang on there. This borders on being a personal attack, which is not tolerated in any form on this site per Terms of Service.
There is no indication of "high-handedness" here. Perhaps you misinterpreted what Hopefull2009 was saying.
Most universities and schools have minority scholarships in place. You have to BE a minority to qualify for one!
This wasn't a racial attack, which it seems you interpreted it as.
Now back to the OP's question....

I dont know where you are from but I just finished lpn school in December and if you are a male you will get in faster because there is a big need for them they have the upper body strength that females just dont have and my instructor told us that men can write there own ticket for the most part. good luck
I work with some of those "weak women" and to be honest even though I find there are some advantages to being a male in nursing, alot of them can work circles around me! Even though there is lifting involved most of your time is not spent lifting. That is a VERY SMALL PART of what it takes to be a good nurse. If you need to move a heavy patient you get some help. As a male with a strong back I do.(most of the time) Many facilities require two people for all lifts/transfers. By the way, no one "writes their own ticket" in nursing.
The use of gender bias in admissions to any educational institution is against the law. Nursing schools accept students who have met the prereqs and then they go on the waiting list. Bottom line is: getting into NS has nothing to do with your sex.
Are laws always enforced though? The gender bias in admissions will be relative to the gender bias and legal compliance of the admissions officer.
Hello-
As a male I have inquired about this. Not because I don't have the grades, because I do, I was just interested. My conclusion from doing research and asking schools (fake name), is that while some schools strait up say that they look for males, most do not say so.
However, it is true that schools want to have a demographic that represents society. Nursing and nursing schools are dominated by females. So, in order to try and balance it out they might do something like this. If they have two applications, one male, one female, same qualifications, they will most likely pick the male to balance things out. Even doing this most classes will still be mostly female.
Once you are in school there are scholarships for male and minority students (since males of any color are in the minority in this case).
good luck, and keep the grades up, that's the only way you will know for sure:wink2:
