Hello all,
I'm currently a new nurse working on an oncology unit in LI but to my disappointment most our patients are med/surg and only small percentage is oncology. I feel like I'm not 100% fullfilling what I love to do which is oncology. I've only been there for 3+ months and I'm already thinking of leaving in the near future (1 or 2 years). I will NOT leave now b/c I still have so much to learn but once I got my experience, I will definity want to move on to a more oncology speciality hospital like Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
I really want to work for Sloan in the near future and I would like to know if anybody or know someone that work there? What are their typical nurse to patients ratio? Their current salary? Benefit? Pension? Working environment? Any information will be greatly appricated!
Thank you in advance!
I've been at MSK for 2 years, and have been told that currently they are hiring RN's through current employee referral only. This may change at some point, but currently that's what they're doing. It is a great place to work and I know I will stay for a long time. Best of luck to all in the job search!

Are these current employee referrals from RNs only or other employees? (I've got a pharmacist friend there).
WOW.. my mom has worked there since before i was born i think shes at 40 years lol .. She loves it and now that I'm 23 I've realized nursing is what I want to do and when I'm done with school Memorial Sloan Kettering is my first choice. Do you think in about 5 years I will able to work there since she maybe retired by then?? And will it help that shes been there for so long? I might be able sooner if they accept adns
:hpygrp:Hi Wiggles,
I think it will definately give you an advantage that your mom has worked at MSK for so long. After your first year of clinicals be sure to apply for the CAP program. The combination of these two things will give you a very good chance of being hired as an RN at MSK. They do hire adns, that is the degree I held when I was hired!
Best of Luck!
In response to the atmosphere at MSKCC, I worked there for my summer externship and everyone I met there was outstanding. They all loved their jobs, loved the support, the environment, and seriously everyone said that once you work there, you wouldn't want to work anywhere else. They have everything in-house (like interpreters and.. carpenters?!) which is pretty darn cool. The nurses are very professional, knowledgeable, and caring. The patients come from all over (Turkey, US Virgin Islands, UAE...) and it's quite an experience.
Apparently they're not really hiring any new grads now, even from their extern pool.. or maybe it's just me and my friends. But their benefits and pay are freakishly amazing. So props and congrats if you can get a job here, you're set!!
