Memorial Hermann TMC Job offer

Published

Hello,

I am a florida transplant, relocating to the Houston area, and recently got a job offer on the CVIMU at Memorial Hermann at TMC. Ive read a few blogs that briefly touched on the commute challenges of the TMC. Can someone please elaborate on these challenge? Parking? and if there's a train that passes on Fanin? I google mapped the hospital and see that there's some sort of train stop/ rails on that street.

BTW, Ill be working nights (temporarily)

Im also looking for a nice rental community. Ive been looking in the Pearland area, and recently discovered that sugarland may be too far of a commute. Any recommendations where safety, good schools, low crime and affordability is considered will be great.

Hi I live in the Houston area and currently work at the VA hospital while I am completing my ADNprogram. Welcome to TEXAS! Ok now I have that out of the way. Since you will working nights the commute will not be that difficult for you. I live in Stafford which is not too far from Sugarland (10 mins) and I take US Hwy 90 into the medical center and can make it to work in 15 minutes. HWY 90 turns in to Main st.

There is a rail that runs up Fannin and again night shift people might not have it to bad the only thing is, it does not run as frequently as the mornings. You will have to time yourself. Working in the medical center you will have to pay for parking which is a pain considering how congested it may be and when you get off, the morning folks will be coming to work so yeah that might be a pain in the rear too with the rail system. You will also have the option to park in the garage at Herman but either way, it's going to cost you.

OK RENTAL...Pearland is a nice area but hell on the weekends, there is construction and currently one way in and out which is on Broadway st. 288 is the HWY and yo may run into some traffic trying to get to work and get home...my personal opinion, Sugarland in the way to go. You can definitely compare the areas once you get here. Ok I am ending this novel, let me know if you have any other questions! Happy to help!

You can park in the garage at TMC for free after 1800. Working night shift will make for about a 30 min commute from almost anywhere due to the central location of the med center. You can also look into friendswood, clear lake, Klein isd as well. Add on another 20 min from getting in the garage to getting to CV as the campus is HUGE

Kingwood is also a nice area and easy drive to the medical center. Stay away from anything off highway 290. If you plan on switching to day shift, your commute is going to be miserable out to Sugarland. If go with Kingwood as highway 59 had more freeway lanes and not nearly as congested. I live in the med center and travel out to baytown for work along with the med center and grew up in Klein. Stay away from EVERYTHING East of downtown.

Thanks for the insight! Do you work nights as well? Which hospital? Have you ever tried taking the rail? Can you please tell me who services the rail and if there's a website I can look into to see the schedule? I am sorry for bombarding you with all these questions, but when I first started nursing, I worked nights and it was a disaster!I couldnt stay awake for the commute back home. If the rail is reasonable, then I'd like to explore that option. Does it travel to/ from sugarland?

I appreciate all your help!

@FUZZY911 What hospital do you work at in TMC. Does the free parking after 6p apply to all the facilities in TMC? Thanks for your reply!!!

The rail only goes through downtown and the medical center. Both areas, unless you can pay for private school for kids is an absolute no go for education. I used to ride the light rail into work, it's not a big deal. I think Orleans every 7/min and on the weekend every 15 or 20. I work at Hermann TMC on nights. All the hospital garages have different rules. Ben taub for example owns the garage out right so the parking was 40$ a month, but day shift was not allowed to park in it. U park off site and get bussed or light railed in. If u have a motorcycle parking is discounted and sometimes free In some garages.

Also, public transportation in Houston is a joke. If you worked 9_5 they have the metro lots in the suburbs you can ride in on. But for shift work it doesn't work. The regular metro is very scary and not safe.

Are there any area near the TMC that are nice, safe and with good schools?

Houston isd is horrible. So no, no good schools near the med center in the city. Unless you can pay for private you need to go to the suburbs: Sugarland, Kingwood, Pearland ect

Welcome to my home town!!!! I hope you love it as much as I do.

Here, take a look at this site... Houston Subdivisions and Houston Neighborhoods: HAR.com Then, contact a qualified Realtor to help you figure out your housing situation. If you're working nights, the 288 corridor would be very convenient for you. There are many new-ish apartment complexes as well as single family rentals of all price ranges. It is very direct, not requiring any traverse through other areas of the city... a real plus to any Houston traffic newbie.

Your mileage may vary, but most TMC newbies become adjusted fairly quickly. In addition to other commuting options, there is an organized car pool/ van pool system which you may be interested in. The M-H HR department will be able to provide you with details.
