I understand the money issue, but...... sometimes we get so wrapped up in money that sometimes we confuse our true worth with our financial income. We also confuse where our heart wants to be with where we "ought" to be. In addition, working straight nights in a stressful job can create a unique type of tunnel vision which you can't recognize until you do something else and come out of the fog!
Your body is crying out for a change in pace. Your heart is telling you that this job move is needed and wanted.
I am speaking from experience when I say that I almost died 10 years ago because of my job. I was so deeply into a very stressful (and well-paying) nursing job that when I got very ill. I ignored the symptoms. I believe that the stress brought it on. I ended up in ICU 4 hours from my hometown, dying of a mysterious illness that no one could diagnose. Thank goodness for the Internet.... I had a very rare form of Grave's Disease (the fourth case reported in the world). Doctors were able to put the symptoms into a search engine and came up with another case, were able to save me.
My point is..... a job and a certain income is not worth risking your health, mental OR physical. I have taken many paycuts and never regretted it as long as I was doing what I wanted to do. Don't let a certain pay rate hold you hostage. There are no statues out in front of your hospital honoring those who gave all for their work. Know your true worth, and that a good night's sleep, great coworkers and a LIFE (yes, there is life off the night shift and out of the hospital) are worth everything.
Go for it. I can assure you that things will be okay and you'll not regret it!!!
Good for you!! Now the challenge will be to not be too overwhelmed. Best advice: Get the kids taken care of - the paperwork will follow.

One question for all of you: How old will you be in 5 years if you DON'T? Answer: 5 years older - and you'll still be thinking, "I wish I'd done it!"
My husband and I have an agreement - I support him, he supports me, and it's a PARTNERSHIP. Sometimes I do 90%, sometimes he does 90% - but if you don't believe in each other, you're sunk.

I'm considering writing online courses for School Health personnel, aimed at people new to School Health as well as current school health assistants/technicians. The courses would be simple and practical, and would be priced at about $50 - $100 per course. May or may not be able to get CE credit status, but would receive a certificate of completion. I decided to do this after realizing how awfully hard it is to leave our jobs even for one day - plus the cost of gas, lodging (I'm from a rural area), etc.Is this something that would be valuable to you or School Health people in your district?
I'd like to hear your opinion.
Here in Arizona, we have to take a one-day course every 5 years to do hearing screening. Contact the State department which requires the screenings (here, it's the Office of Women's and Children's Health).

You didn't say what grades the job would cover, but I'll address the questions as best I can.
1. The ADHD child who comes to your office, acting out..... I would not give more meds. At the very least I'd call the Dr. office and see what they recommend, plus you can get an order to increase the meds if that's the doctor's intention. Without a doctor's order, you're kinda stuck. At least, if you do nothing, the child will not have any adverse effects! The behavior can be dealt with.
2. As the school nurse, YOU should have the last say in what is a medical issue. The teacher must be educated. This is a medical problem and must be accommodated. At the High School level, I give the child a pass that states the problem (Johnny has a medical condition that necessitates frequent bathroom use. Please allow him to use the bathroom as needed. ) If the teacher is resistant, reassure the teacher that if the pass is being abused that you will deal with it. I require a note from the parent or from the doctor before I will issue a pass. I have very rarely had a kid abuse the privilege because they know that it will be revoked and they NEED to use the bathroom.) If the teacher still resists, then the child may come to the Health Office to use the bathroom and eat. Period.
