  1. Are we allowed to be people before nurses?? (long)

What a shame that your manager will not support you. Only you can decide if you want to continue to work in this environment. I think before taking pts from the ED, you need to be able to care for the patients you already have. Banging against the...
  2. Swan questions

We wedge on stable pts q 4 hrs and use heparinized saline.
  3. INSPIRATIONAL-Why are YOU a Nurse?

Congratulations on your decision. I think sometimes we nurses forget the enthusiasm you have shown. Day to day we all make a difference, although we sometimes do not realize this. Good luck with your new profession!
  4. How many weekends are you required to work?

None, we have the "baylor plan"!
  5. Do all of your vented pt's get restrained?

We do not restrain all patients on vents. Many are restrained, probably about 70%. Others with dec LOC, or those chronic COPD's that just about suction themselves... don't need to be. JCAHO was happy about that. We have a line/tube protocol to follow...
  6. Getting thru the first year of ICU training

As a long experienced Critical Care Rn, I have seen many people come and go in the ICU. It takes a long time, I agree prob at least 2 yrs before you really feel comfortable. I would highly recommend any Critical Care courses or inservices you can a...
  7. nurse - patient ratio

I would present the facts, keep it focused on pt care and outcomes. Don't make it personal. I agree that it is prob budgetary driven from the NM side. ( what isn't these days?)
  8. What do you guys think of this???

In my last postion, I arranged travel RNs for my unit. I would NEVER sign a contract with one until I talked to them. If thery were in the same city, I may have even asked for a face to face meeting. It is a big risk for any hospital to hire some...
  9. First day on my own--from worst to first

Great job! I wish we could bottle your enthusiasm and positive attitude. You will go far and be an asset to any facility that you work at! Keep up the great work! :balloons:
  10. Do you have to attend "rounds'?

We have daily rounds on in my ICU. All disciplines come including the case managers. We identify pt problems and goals for the day. It helps in getting everyone "on the same page". It works well for us. At first everyone thought the 9am time wo...
  11. disciplinary nightmare

I would be honest and admit you made a mistake. I really don't understand why your School of Nsg would not have made clear to you about how to sign your name. However this is all water under the bridge. Move on, be humble, arrange with your lawy...
  12. Job won't quit calling on my days off!!!!!

I have been on both sides, management and staff, so I totally know where you and your manager are coming from. Above all do NOT feel guilty. Everyone works the hours they do for a reason. If there is ever a time that you want to do extra, just b...
  13. Driving a great hospital into mediocrity...

We went through this about 4 years ago...It was horrible. Same quote about working smarter not harder. Must be same company. All I can say is that we lived through it, many left. Now 4 years later they have saved some money and we are right back ...
  14. Need advice as a family member

I would send the investigator back to the nursing home, and follow up with their findings.
  15. Male coworkers harrassing female staff...

Document, document, document!! File official grievences, with your manager and HR dept. Threaten a lawsuit. Keep your husband out of it. You will win in the end.
