It appears you don't grasp: 1) the nursing profession 2) the medical profession 3) the definition of socioeconomics 4) the difference in the credentials between nations I really hope you continue to grow in life, this shell of judgment can't be human...
  2. Neither was I. But then again I don't have kids, so maybe that is holding some back?
  3. I've been a nurse for 3 years and in the ER for less than 3 years. My take home pay is roughly 108k a year. That's take home I didn't mistype. the stress I would feel on the job is outweighed by my compensation. work smart work hard. In that order...
  4. Social Class and Nursing

Latin isn't "spoken" and I'm pretty sure that's taught in low socioeconomic circles as well. Yes I find the question insulting and yes I think you sound pretentious as heck in the way you have formed it.
  5. Beard for interviews?

Yeah, I have a beard, it's not neat or trimmed but I comb it for special events. Definitely keep it, be yourself, and kick butt in those interviews. Be comfortable with yourself and others will be comfortable with you. might even offer you a job.
  6. Beard as a male nurse?

I love when people say hair has germs in it. Eew yuck, not germs! Well now I understand why all nurses have very short hair, close cropped to the skull. Yes I am pointing at you, females.
  7. Good idea?

Just apply to everything you can - WHEN you are eligible to. Don't waste your money on applications if you don't have the required pre-requisites they ask you to have at the time of application. And apply to BSN and ADN programs, trust me, some ADN...
  8. Am I nuts?

OR nurses scrub in from time to time. The reason Surgical techs exist is because they do the what OR nurses do for less. FLAME AWAY but it's true. So as an OR nurse, you will not only be well rounded but also get to do your precious surgical learni...
  9. What skill videos should a new ER nurse be watching

I would watch videos on EJ insertion, IV using guided ultrasound, IO placement, correct EKG and right side EKG placement, proper needle thoracentesis protocol for tension pneumos, Chest tube and suction set up (for placement and maintaining), and of ...
  10. Interview

If they ask you what animal you would be, tell them you would be a wolf or a dog and AVOID saying any kind of bear (maybe koala bear is ok). Seriously. Canines are team players, and the ED managers love that question for some stupid reason. By the w...
  11. ER - How to stay calm

I pride myself on being self sufficient in the Emergency room. However, sometimes I just ain't got time to do an EKG or apply a sugar tong splint after a conscious sedation. It's inevitable to feel overwhelmed at times in the emergency department. ...
  12. Getting into Trauma

Well for one you don't have to go to a Trauma I. Trauma II are just as well equipped except since they aren't teaching hospitals you won't have researchers and residents running around. You should look up your state's trauma categorizations for fac...
  13. ER ADVICE

I started as a new grad RN in the ER and had never seen an emergency room besides one day doing a rotation during clinicals. I didn't have any problem adjusting to the high flow population, and I am in a trauma ED next to a major airport; although...
  14. IO checkoffs

We do IO insertion in our yearly ED competency classes. One of our nurse managers initially checked us off on the skill. The subjects we use are chicken legs. Works great. We use manual and EZ IO. I've used the EZIO on 9 adults and 7 children an...
