I am hoping I can get some responses to this from people who are familiar with the Hospital in the Houston area. I am interviewing with St. Luke's as a graduate nurse and also at Clear Lake Regional. St. Lukes is offering only Med/Surg and I have a shot at ICU at Clear Lake Regional.
I wonder if anyone has any opinions about either hospital and their environment as a place of work. One advantage that Clear Lake has is that the traffic is not as hellish as it is in trying to get to the Medical Center. Plus parking is free. However, St. Luke's has good reputation.
Anyway, any opinions?

every nurse i have worked with who worked at St. Luke's in Houston has glowed about that hospital. i know nothing baout clear lake, so i can't comment on that facility.
St. Luke's is magnet status and is well respected throughout the nation, is in the medical center and has having a grapevine positive recommendation. As a graduate nurse, I would be very picky about where you first learn. My first experience (at Hermann) was a nightmare. I do not recommend Hermann for Neuroscience.

Are you sure St. Luke's is only offering Med/Surg? I work ICU here and we are short! Talk to Cheryl Bothe. I don't know her number off the top of my head but she works in Nurse Recruitment.

I also work at St. Luke's (Houston) and to the best of my knowledge the nursing residency (program for new grads) hires into all areas including ICU. I have been with St. Luke's for 18 years and wouldn't consider anywhere else. We were the first Magnet hospital in Texas and have just completed our recertification visit. The deadline for applying for the residency program is March 14. For more info check out website http://www.stlukestexas.com
Hope you decide to join our staff.

You've been PM'ed.
I got an e mail from the nurse recruiter telling mre that all they are offering right now is Med/Surg or OR. Quite a few of my classmates actually wanted ICU, since we di a preceptorship there and loved it in the ICU there. I don't know what's going on. I have decided to go ahead and interview for med/surg even though it's not my first choice.

I will see if I can find out anything tomorrow. I will likely see the VP of Nursing for Critical care at the Staff Nurse Council meeting and see if she has any info. Will get back with you asap.

Thanks. I appreciate your help. I was thinking maybe they are trying not to have too many new grads in ICU. But still, I would love a chance to be one of those new grads they hire. Hope you find out something good :)
I spoke with the VP today. She says they are definitely hiring GNs into the ICU. The hospital is hoping to hire approximately 50 in the residency program throughout the hospital. She doesn't know why they would have said they were not hiring into ICU. If you could PM me and let me know who gave you that info, she will follow-up to see if why that happened.
Thanks and good luck with your interview!!

I know you originally posted a long time ago; however, I would like to work at St. Luke's in Houston after hearing so many great things about it. Are they still hiring GNs into the ICU? or do they have an ICU internship or nurse residency program. I know that is where I would like to be. Thanks for your help
