MedStar Washington Hospital RN Residency Program

U.S.A. Washington DC

Updated:   Published

Hello Everyone!

I would like to invite everyone who applied to the upcoming MS WHC RN program, or who applied to a previous residency program to post here.

For those who previously applied and interviewed, do you have any interview tips?

For those who applied to the upcoming program, what units did you select? Do you have any previous RN or CNA experience?

I'm finishing up an accelerated BSN program, and I don't have any previous experience (I haven't had the time!). I selected the stroke unit and the ER as my top choices, but I also told them that I would be open to other units.

This will be my first interview for an RN position, so I am nervous! :nailbiting:

Hi all,

So excited to get an interview with Medstar Union Memorial Hospital by the end of April as a new Grad nursing student. To be well prepared for this interview, I have a couple of questions about how it looks like. Is there a written exam to take or any nursing skills to demonstrate during the tour on the unit? I was called to wear scrubs on that day, is that true? I am confused. Thank you for all your comments and advices!

Hi, girls! Anybody working at Medstar Union Memorial Hospital, can you provide some head-up on the nursing management, working environment or salary over there, thanks!

Anybody interview for either of the oncology floors? My interview is at the end of May and I'm very nervous already haha

Hey UVMgrad17! I just interviewed for the surgical oncology floor yesterday. The nurse director and charge nurse were great, and I enjoyed speaking with them. They didn't grill me with any clinical questions; they just asked situational questions on how you deal with conflict, etc. They're really just trying to get a good feel for your personality and if you'll be a good contributor to the unit in terms of work ethic. I don't think you need to be nervous at all.

ahhhh thanks so much! this is very helpful. I just changed my preferences for the second time from med onc to intermediate care while still keep surg onc. I love oncology but kind of pigeon-holed myself so trying to branch out with job opportunities. Congrats on a great interview! booking my trip to DC right now. keep me posted if you hear back! :)

Thanks! I actually got an informal offer during the interview, and then an official offer email the day after. The nurse leaders said they see a lot of surgical patients on the unit as well (bariatric, g-tubes, JP drains, etc.), so it likely won't be all oncology. I'm guessing it'll basically be like a surgical floor, but we'll see. Good luck on your interview!

Hello Everyone!

I'm interested in applying for this residency program this winter 2017 and would love some advice from you guys! I hope y'all can answer a few questions I have.

1) What is the "nursing career battery" test? What content is on it? Did you study?

2) For those who got a job offer, what were your prior experiences and academic stats (e.g. GPA)?

3) For those who applied out of state (which I saw there were a few), did you guys all do your interview over the phone or did some of y'all fly to DC to do it in-person?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Looking to apply at MS WHC and was wondering when they posted the residency openings. All I see is a post from May 2016. Will they post new ones as openings become available?

Hi Hildog,

I would go ahead and apply using the link provided and that post. When you're applied at the beginning of the year, it was the same post I used. After they send you the test, if they want you to come in for an interview they will still ask for your areas of interest. From there, let you know if there is no opening in the area chosen. At least that is how it went for me.

are you going to do surg-onc at MWHC? I interviewed and loved everything but don't think I'll be happy in DC, so I asked to postpone my offer.

uvmgrad17, I sent you a PM!

I am starting the nurse residency program at Medstar Washington Hospital Center in the July cohort and I have a few questions.

1. What is the pay schedule like? Every week or every other week?

2. What does the schedule look like for the first few months?

I appreciate any information you guys have! Thanks!
