Medication safety project help

Published

Hi ! so I am having a hard time coming up with a medication project topic for my class and since ER probally see the most different type of meds i was hoping you guys would help me out in picking a topic so basically the assignment is

Talk about a medication safety concern in the field and ways to improve med administration and patient safety?

One person choose to do a project on IV Potassium administration and the "no-nos" involved with that

I am having the hardest time being specific with my topic so i would love to hear what you guys think :D

You could discuss phenergan since it is caustic but still routinely given IVP. We also give it IM on patients who are quite large and I always wonder if it ends up more subq than IM in those patients. Also, you could discuss something like beta blockers since bradycardia can be common. Epi, since 1:1000 and 1:10000 can be easily confused in a code situation and can also be given in the wrong concentration. Calcium gluconate is usually ordered IVP for hyperkalemia but can also cause adverse reactions and no policy has ever been in place in at any hospital I've been in regarding administration....

You could discuss metformin and IV contrast dye, especially r/t pt education prior to outpatient imaging. When the pt is on the floor, there's usually a protocol to follow. When the pt comes in for the test, things can be dicey. ("So, this meta-whatever...is that the little green pill, the big blue one, or one of the white ones?")

More & more, we see pts taking herbal supplements. Many herbals interact with RX meds, particularly coumadin, decreasing or enhancing absorption.
