Medication aide bill In Arkansas

I lived in Arkansas briefly, for 1 yr, and I worked in a medical clinic, and I saw for my self, medical assistants (no nursing degree) actually giving injections. When I questioned it, no one really answered my question as to how it is legal for a nonmedical degree assistant could give injections?????

Glad I came back home to Georgia. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Arkansas, but, I am used to the way things are done in Georgia.

I was praying this wouldn't happen. The medication aide bill in Arkansas passed the Senate today. Now it goes to the House.
State Senator Barbara Horn is the maker of this bill.
Under this bill med aides would be allowed to administer "nonprescription and legend" drugs orally, topically, drops by eye, ear or nose, lady partslly, rectally, transdermally or with an oral inhaler.
Would not be able to administer injections or controlled substances.
Only requirements for this is a year's experience as an CNA, in good standing with state regulators, and high school diploma, and will have to complete literacy and reading comprehension screening process, and training course approved by state bon.
This bill is supposed to relieve nurses of duties to better care for their residents.

I can think of a hundred duties at least that I would wish to be releived of, but I don't think even the educated public would want this at the top of the list.

They seem to be glossing over the fact that the nurse may be relieved of the duty, but s/he is absolutely NOT relieved of the responsibility. Is the AR BON not fighting this?

Ok it is time for nurses to stick together. Any one remember the drug tests in school? Instructors standing over your shoulder on med passes. Get you picket signs out and spell out the dangers of these unlicensed people passing meds. Get a watchdog group together and find out the first facility who plans to use them . Call the TV and radio stations. Families need to know that their loved ones will be in danger. We cannot let them take away our profession. To save the almighty buck they will sacrifice lives.
