Hello All,
New to site and to nursing. Starting spring semester at Hannah Mullins LPN school here in Ohio in March of 2008. But in January I have to take a Medical Terminology course. I was a CNA for 8 years in a nursing home, so I do know some of the jargon. I was hoping I could get some info from anyone on here to help me brush up and maybe get a head start on some studying over the holidays before I start. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I love this site and it's already given me some help on making the decision to become a nurse. I hope to get a job at one of the local nursing homes when I graduate, don't want to work at a hospital, love old people. Then I plan on going back part-time while I am working to get my RN. Thanks to all of you out there.

I just finished that class. Do you have the textbook yet? Our teacher switched our book for one that used a systems approach and we had a test for each body system. It made it a lot easier to remember having it broken down into manageable chunks. I'd start by picking a body system and memorizing the part names, then work on the problem names. After that, just mix and match to learn new terms.
Thanks for the reply! The school sent me a list of books that I will be needing for my 44 week program back in Oct. The only thing that was on there for Medical Terminology was (Medical Terminology in a Flash: An Interactive Flashcard Approach by Author Eagle), no textbook. Was just curious what books or sites I could check out since what they are using seems to be just a flashcard approach. The class starts Jan 8 and is two days a week for 2 1/2 hours a day, the final exam is on Feb 4, and then I start my other classes in March 5 days a week for 8 hours a day. I am supposed to be getting a textbook and workbook on Essentials of A&P, and about 10 other books, but just flashcard approach for terminology.
Thanks again for the reply, maybe I can find some books at my local library on body parts/systems. Think that would be easier for me as well.

This is a good site for medical terminology. People who have been transcriptionist use it.

I took a medical terminology portion for my Health Profession Skills (prereq for ADN program) class and the book we used was great. I also went ahead and purchased the online course which was sold seperately. The book was very easy to use, you can go at your own pace, and the exercises really help you retain the information. It also comes with a Companion CD-Rom which gives you activities and tests to work on. On top of that, the book comes with an Audio CD to help you pronunciate the terms correctly. The online course is very helpful (its not a necessity), I used it just for more information, more quizzes more test to make sure I knew it down pack!! I really like it because it gives you clinical applications, pictures of diseases, conditions, treatments, etc. There is also a spanish portion if you would like to learn that. All in all, I would give this book a 'A'. I learned so much from it and would definitely recommend it to others wanting to learn med term on there own terms!

My Med term textbook was avaliable through Borders and Barnes and Noble. They also had a quick version of it. i would just go there and browse the medical section.

I read Medical Terminology Demystified. It's like a "For Dummies" book, so everything is explained in real-world terms, not just lists of words to memorize.
I used this book to get a jump on A&P topics the semester before my class started, reading a few pages every morning while drying my hair! When I got to A&P (my first science class in 10 years), I found that most of the basics sounded familiar and I could automatically break down words I didn't know.
Good luck!
