Medical Missions?

Published

The thread on "will the NICU limit me" is kind of discouraging to me because I am starting NICU internship in June as a new grad (very excited), but also am interested in volunteering for medical missions to third world countries. Are there very many opportunities for neonatal nurses to do medical missions in our area of specialty? I know the same technologies/equipment will not be available, but will my skills still be useful?

My mission team was a faith based group called Dorcas Medical Mission out of New York. My cousin introduced me to the group but members traveled from all over the states and the world to participate in these missions. No we had to find our our own funding-a sour note in all this-the Drs went for free but the nurses had to pay. Some of the nurses recieved sponsorship from their church and the medications were donations from corporations.

Eeek, yeah I'd be pretty upset if the docs went free but I had to pay! Either everyone free or no one free...
