Hi guys im starting school this semester with hopes of applying to the nursing program in 2015.Now when I was 19 (im 21 now) I thought it was cool of me to get a medical marijuana recommendation and also to be safe from cops (which did work once) but anyways now that im starting school again I wanna do it clean and not smoke anymore. The recommendation I had expired back in may of 2012 so its been awhile since ive had it and I never got it again I let it expire.i plan on not smoking anymore after new years soo ill have a good year to get clean. What im worried is if my recommendation will show up in my history and prevent me of getting a job as a nurse, should I even apply to nursing school or should i start thinking of another major or should I be fine?,if you guys can help me out I would appreciate it and it will help me start school worry free thanks guys
It always cracks me up that people on this discussion board are always so quick to judge someone on their marijuana usage. Considering there are proven health benefits. No I don't condone usage if you plan on becoming a nurse, but you'd think health industry inclined people would be more understanding. That being said, If the recommendation is expired then that answers your question right there. Your health is for you and your doctor to know, not the school and a background check. Many posters gave you some good advice and I hope you found the answers you were looking for. If you feel passionately for pursuing your dreams of becoming a nurse, then you can do it! Good luck with your nursing endeavors!
I'm not questioning therapeutic effect. I'm questioning the recreational use of it in someone who wants to provide healthcare to others. I think many of us would agree there are benefits to certain patients. But if you're in the category of someone who requires medical marijuana, how can you handle the physical demands of being a nurse?
My husband has had chronic pain for years and nothing has helped relieve it. We live in a state that allows medical marijuana. He can't use it. Why? Because he drives large trucks and the DOT will not allow use of it, even medically, due to potential safety issues. Similarly, the BON in most states won't allow it.
As I said before, you need to figure out what is more important to you.
