Air is used to cut pure O2 in order to be able to adjust FiO2. I suppose you could use pure medical nitrogen too, but if you made a mistake and forgot to turn on the O2, you'd kill someone. Air is safer because you'll never go below 0.21 FiO2

are you saying that medical air is used in conjunction with pure oxygen in order to "fine tune" the FiO2 the patient receives?
