I think this is a brilliant idea! Certainly deregulation of the health insurance industry in Australia has already demonstrated an amazing improvement in competition, decreased demand on the public system, and a dramatic decrease in waiting times across the board. Public hospital beds are empty half the time, right?
As Gary Nairn says, there's no reason why the government should own a health fund. They're not in the business of providing a fundamental service for their constituents, after all.
As another step toward a for-profit health provision service, selling off Medicare makes complete sense. And heaven knows that the US model of health care has been an amazing success - lower health costs, equitable and universal coverage, and profits for investors/shareholders. The Australian model we're using currently seems to have improved health as it's aim, rather than profit - sheer madness!
Sarcastic? I can't imagine why any of you who've read previous posts by me would think that!
