Medibank sale Bill introduced to Parliament

Specializes in ICU.

The Bill to sell Medibank Private has been introduced to Federal Parliament.

The Government aims to sell the health insurer in 2008.

The Special Minister of State, Gary Nairn, has told Parliament the sale will boost competition.

"There is no sound policy reason for the Australian Government to continue to own a health fund," he said.

"Competition between funds is the best way of keeping a lid on premiums.

Not commenting on this one...................... Mixed blessing? Don't know - I think only time will tell.

I think this is a brilliant idea! Certainly deregulation of the health insurance industry in Australia has already demonstrated an amazing improvement in competition, decreased demand on the public system, and a dramatic decrease in waiting times across the board. Public hospital beds are empty half the time, right?

As Gary Nairn says, there's no reason why the government should own a health fund. They're not in the business of providing a fundamental service for their constituents, after all.

As another step toward a for-profit health provision service, selling off Medicare makes complete sense. And heaven knows that the US model of health care has been an amazing success - lower health costs, equitable and universal coverage, and profits for investors/shareholders. The Australian model we're using currently seems to have improved health as it's aim, rather than profit - sheer madness!

Sarcastic? I can't imagine why any of you who've read previous posts by me would think that!
