med surge tele or mother baby

Published

Hello my fellow nurses. I m RN with two years of med surg exp. I took a 8 month break after this due to pregnancy reasons and its taken about 6 months to find a job. Baby is now 15 months. I found a med surg tele job recently. I have been working there for bot 3-4 weeks in training. I have also recently been hired to a mother baby position not affiliated with the hospital. Should I stay in med surg with this high stress and over worked environment or give mother baby a try. Cons is that mother baby is an 45 min to an hour from home while the med surg position is 15 min away from home. Pay is about the same. Mother baby pays ten dal more a day. Pease advise me. I WANT TO TRY MOTHER BABY BUT THE DRIVE AND DISAPPOINTING MY NURSE MANAGER ON MED SURG WHO WAS SO SWEET TO HIRE ME KINDA HURTS. BUT I WANT TO DO WHAT MAKES ME HAPPY.I CAN SEE POSSIBIITY OF ADVANCEMENT AT THE MED SRG POSITION TOO.BUT WHO IS TO SAY MOTHER BABY DOES NOT HAVE ADVANCEMENT, I HAVE YET TO KNOW.PLEASE ADVISE ME NURSES.

Mother/Baby!! But I am biased. That's where I work. ;)

Hi! Right out of nursing school I landed a med-surg day position. It was super busy and super crazy, too crazy for me. I knew pretty much right away med-surg wasn't the place for me long term. After about 5 months, I landed a position on a postpartum unit and have not looked back. Today I work on a very busy mother/baby unit night position. It has its ups and downs, just like med-surg, but this is the field I belong in. You will use your med-surg experience on mother/baby. I travel 45 minutes to work (one way). I find that if I like my job, the drive isn't that big of a deal. It comes down to what is going to make you a happy nurse and not fearing the unknown. Maybe you can try mother/baby, but leave you current unit in good standing, that way you may be welcomed back if the m/b position doesn't work out for you?

For me, the commute time and opportunity for advancement would be very high priority. For those reasons, I would probably stay with the M/S job. More importantly to me would be my coworkers and work environment.

Thanks for the recommendations. I will be accepting the offer to mother baby. I am trying to type up a resignation letter now. I think that I need to give it a try. I might never know how much I may love it. Because I sure don't like med surg much. Believe it or not I worked yesterday on med surg and my nurse manager called me into the office to review some paperwork and my hand was on under my chin and none of my preceptor paperwork was complete. Instantly she told me am I tired. I told her no and why did she think that. (I really was burnt out that day)She said because you are in your nurse directors office and your hand is under your chin and that If I do not want to be there let her know today because she invested a lot of time and money training me and the floor is a heavy floor to work on. I told her I don't want to leave but she told me to think about it. I think that was the universe/God answering my question. Any input. Thanks

Sounds like it IS a sign from God. I'm happy for you, and I think you should try mother/baby unit. It's a great opportunity to try something different, and you just might like it!!
